| Anyone here ever carry a shotgun while in the service ?
When I was station at Eltoro Airbase ,Calif. with the 3rd MAW for about 7 months in late '69 to early '70 ,I was assign to station and since they didn't need my MOS ,I was assign MP duty ,where I usually carried a 1911 auto 45 ,even though my assign weapon was a M14 that stayed at the armoury.
Back then , President Nixon would sometimes fly Airforce 1 and leave it there as he went to his home in Sacremento.I pulled guard duty on the fuel tanker and was issued a trench tactical shotgun,it was an Winchester '97 with 00 buckshot shells .
Anyone else here ever use a military shotgun while in uniform ? |

MCAS Yuma, 1977, armory guard. I got in trouble for shooting the supports on the target during the fam course for the shotgun. That double 00 can really cut things down |

We had one in my Humvee on deployment, and I've had to carry one around during various training exercises, but I've never used one. They never give us any ammo for it, and if they did, it'd probably only be door breaching-type rounds.

Carried one on ammo bunker guard duty in the CZ '77',3 lousy rnds 00 buck no bayonet, and was riot control issue.Double ought buck wouldnt have done me much good on top of one of those huge oil storage tanks I was tapped to guard riot control. The buckshot spread woulda been huge at the bottom of the tank given its size. One of those industrial size oil storage tanks, shottie was a joke and simply a noismaker up there.

We had Winchester M1200's in the company arms room at Ft. Myer, Va from 1975 to 1979 when I was there.
I never shot one. The Plt. Sgts. were to be issued the shotguns in case we were called out to go guard the White House or other places in DC in case of riots.
Me and my buddy used to clean them prior to inspections since we were the "gun nuts".

I would occasionally get tapped for Prison Chaser duty at Camp LeJeune in late '60 and '61. I was issued a Winchester 97 and brass-cased 00 buck for it. Fired it for familiarization during PC training (No, not Politically Correct!!) but never had to chamber a round during duty.

I toted around a Mossberg 590 in OIF 05-07 occasionally. I ended up shooting some dogs with it that kept on setting off our trip flares around our outpost.

Not while in the military, but I did carry a 14" Remington 870 as my room clearer when I worked with our Proac unit in the late '80's and early 90's. It was a fun gun.

I was stationed in Naples, Italy with a MCSFCo. from 88-90 and our most common shotguns were the Mossberg 590 (no 590A1 back in those days) with the bead sight early on but later with ghost ring sights on the later models. We also had some older Winchester 1200 trench guns but they weren't too popular. I guess I felt the same as a lot of the other guys in that we were turned off by the speed pump feature that blew the forend back out of your hand when you fired it. We also had 2 Remington 870s that had the factory top-folding stock and the barrel cut back to the magazine cap that we used to guard the CINCSouth over at AFSouth.
These days in the USAF as a CATM instructor, we are mainly using the 870. Early models were the typical riot configuration and some of them were quite old as far as 870s go. Today they have been replaced at the bases I've been stationed at with the 870 MCS. Same 870 action but now with a pistol grip buttstock, shorter forend rifle sights, a top rail and a barrel clamp that also as a couple rail segments on it.

Maritime Law Enforcement Boardings (MLE) I did from 85-88 the Small Boat Crewman, who was also an "extra" member of the boarding team, usually had a 12 guage pumper at the ready as we boarded. Depending on how many people were on board the boat we were boarding he would either come with us or stay in the small boat.
At the MLE Academy we qualified with the shotgun; firing a Combat Shotgun Course. I shot expert. I can't remember but I think the gun was a Mossberg 500 with a US stamp on it. |

When I was stationed at MCAS Tustin in the 80s we had to pull 30 days guard every 6 months on the flightline. We were issued 870s. One night I was accompanying some dumb corporal of the guard who thought it might be a good thing to do to sneak around the flightline to try to find a sentry not walking his post. After sneaking between the birds up and down the line, we hear the unmistakable sound of an 870 racking a round and this pissed off young Marine ordering us to the ground. I can remember turning my face to the corporal while on the ground and saying something about "I told you so you idiot!" |

Carried a M870 MK1 Trenchgun while on armory duty at ITR, Camp Geiger.
used under fair use act
Our orders were:
If anyone touches the fence, yell halt.
If amyone climbs the fence, yell halt.
If anyone swings a leg over the fence, yell halt and shoot them.
If they fall on the outside call the MPs.
If they fall on the inside, Yell Halt and shoot em again. Then call the MPs.
Nobody gets in the Armory alive.
At least as told to us by the Sgt of the Guard. |

| Where's the icon for 'bloody rat hole'?
NVA and VC prisoners were not particularly impressed with the M14 and M1911, so when a group of 'confirmed' was transported, the guard would sit on the cab of the truck, armed with a M1897 Winchester, loaded with OO Buck. One demonstration, tearing a small tree in half, was all it took to get them to behave. |
