Skeet With a Riot Gun

Okay, since we're talking about riot guns, does anyboby like to shoot skeet with their HD shotgun? Occasionally I like to take my 20" Rem. 870 police/riot gun to the skeet range and shoot a round or two of 25. I shoot with a very low gun to make the exercise at least somewhat relevant to real life. My thinking is that it helps make operating the controls under pressure instinctive and increases speed and accuracy, especially the incomers at station eight. I understand that rookie boarder patrol agents get some of their shotgun training on a skeet range as well.

Whenever I show up with a riot gun at the skeet range I usually hear some comments about it and my shooting technique. Stuff like "do you always keep your shotgun in your boot?" and "get a holster quick draw". Its all in fun and I get a laugh out of it, but our skeet club is pretty laid back. I'm just woundering if this sort of thing is too Elmer Fudd for most people, or do other people get their grins the same way.

I shoot hand-thrown clays with my 9-shot Mossberg 590, but I've never actually shot a formal round of skeet (with that gun or any gun).

No not with a riot gun but with this target shotgun I have. I actually do better with the peep site on this gun than I do with a bead Once in a while we get together here on the ranch and go through a few cases of shot and pigeons. I suck with a regular shotgun with the beads. I brought this target shotgun out one day for the heck of it and I was hitting 4 out the 5 pidgeons with it. Everyone else who used it did not hit a thing. When asked how I did it the only answer I could think of was that I am good with a rifle therefor use to peep sites. I would keep the gun up, barrel down and when pull was said I would bring the peep sight up to my eye and then bring the front of the gun up and as soon as the front post was in line with the peep and the pidgeon I would pull the trigger and whala the pidgeon would dissapear

Official rules prohibit short bbls on skeet ranges. My club is now enforcing that rule and won't allow anything under 22". So I keep the shorties in the case til I'm on the field. Then remove, use, and put away before anyone has a problem.

Well, I went out yesterday afternoon and shot a couple rounds of 25 with the 870 20". Also shot a few rounds with my o/u. My average with the Rem wasn't much worse than what I shot with my o/u. Which probably indicates that I'm not a very gifted shotgun shooter. Oh well, it will keep the crack heads off of the front porch.

I shot with a couple of guys that I teach hunter's safety with. They had their expensive O/Us and I would like to say I cleaned their clock, but I didn't. I did give them a run for their money though. All in all it was a very satisfying evening.

Yes, I've shot with both my M1S90 and S12 AK conversion. For me the pistol grip makes technique a little awkward and I find I swing too fast.

I shot a round of skeet with my old wingmaster police gun. No choke, 20 inch barrel. And using 0000 buck! I know, a little expensive but I wanted to see how I did. I hit 21 out of 25. What a blast.

I don't think showing up at the skeet range with a riot gun looks as silly as showing up at a riot with a skeet gun.

I have never shot either. I did go out shooting in the desert once and took an old Zoli Grey eagle to shoot clays. My buddy had his mossy with a pistol grip and no butt stock.

My Zoli's hand guard split like a hot dog bun so I had no shotgun. We decided to shoot the rest with his riot shotgun. I think I fired 50rds with that thing. My right hand was stiff for a week! I did manage to hit about 60% of the targets though. I had to do it almost as fast as they came out of the launcher or else I had no chance of hitting it.

I shoot a lot of Skeet, Trap, and Sporting Clays. If you are shooting just for fun, and being safe, I don't really care what type of shotgun you are shooting. In fact I think it is a good idea to take your home defense shotgun out to the skeet range to shoot and get use to. Better to learn how to use it at the range than trying to figure it out under stress when someone is breaking into your home.

There are multiple accounts of the Doughboys shooting stick grenades right out of the air with their M1897's. Open choke, 8 00 buck, conceivable--and if you hit the grenade with that, it'll blow.

Fritz thought the M1897 inhumane. This, from the inventors of nerve gas.

Best!
