What are the current military shotguns?

I've seen a few of M1014 (JSCS) Benelli's with the USMC, but not a whole bunch with the other services. With the USAF I've seen a number of Mossbergs and Remington 870's. With the Army, it seems I see a lot of the same. This is not a statistically meaningful observation, but I'm curious as to what is currently in the field.

A good friend of our got back recently and he carried a chopped down 14" 870 with a pistol grip strapped to his back for busting down doors, and serious "social work".

Marines have the M870 MK1 Trenchgun in service, but most likely on a small scale compared to the benelli.

We carry the Bennelli while on post sometimes. It's a nice shotgun, but other than a reliable semi-auto, I personally don't care much for it. We also have a Mossberg 500 in our armory for NCIS, but they haven't trained on it in a LONG time.

A good friend of mine was trained with the Mossberg M590A1 during his service in the USMC. That was the only shotgun he ever saw during his service from 1996 - 2002.
He liked it enough that he bought one of his own.
AFAIK those are still in service along with Remington 870's, Benelli's, and maybe even others in smaller quantities.

We issue the Mossberg M500 (ala Wal-Mart special). However, I have seen a few Army units also issue the M590. While I was at Al Asad Air Base, the Marines were carrying the Benelli.

This article appeared in the Oct 2005 issue of PS Magazine. It is self explanatory.

I can't believe no one uses Ithaca M37s any more. Bottom load and eject - no dirt, no rain, no snow in the action. Forged receiver, easy take down for cleaning, minimum of small parts inside and light to carry. Almost forgot how the old ones fire when the slide hits the end of travel if you hold the trigger down (auto ignition I think they call it). There are several (hunting not riot/trench types) still in service in my family older than 30 years and one that is over 50 years old. Never any failures of any type. I realize hunting ain't combat but years of hunting in North Dakota (very cold/dry), Michigan (cold/wet), west Texas (dry/dusty), West Virginia (cold/wet) and a few other places not as extreme lead me to believe the design works in foul weather and temperature extremes. The military has used some Ithacas. My cousing has a "standard" hunting type M37 with the military inspection marks in various places on it. The serial number is in the WW2 range so we assumed it was an aerial gunnery training shotgun.

Ithaca M37, hold the trigger to the rear, rack the action, weapon fires. That is called a "slam fire". When executed from the hip, mucho lead goes downrange quick. Excellent way to clear a room where a BG is located.

During my Air Force Code Controller years 1982-1991 the shotguns were all 590's with the magazine full tubes and had steel receivers vs civilian alloy receivered guns. These guns were carried everyday and were not babied. They went to the range with us and were shot alot. I personally like the M37 design better(I own one) but if I couldn't have a M37 I'd get a 590.............Mike

I was not aware Mossberg made any receivers out of steel. Every 590 I have ever seen - including US gov't issue - had an alloy receiver.

The ones I saw fielded by the MMT teams were steel. I was surprised when we had a magnet from a screw retreival tool snap right on to the receiver of one. Don't see why Mossberg would supply both steel and alloy receivers to the military? Doesn't really matter to me as I know from now on with the government leaders we have none of us will EVER be allowed to purchase US surplus firearms anyway.......Mike

I will check tomorrow, but I don't believe Mossberg even has the facilities to manufacture receivers out of steel. That is one of their "proprietary" traits, aluminum receivers. Maybe they subcontracted steel receivers for a special run?
