| ???'s Converting Rem 870
I got an Remington 870 Express Combo it came with a 22" Cantilevered Slug Barrel and a 28" Shot barrel
I would like to convert it to Home Defense getting installing the 18.5" barrel no big Deal
So Please Recommend a Tube Extension 7 shot that will not require a lot of modifications
As a Side Note at 100 yards the Slug Barrel will hold a 2" group. Real happy with That

I have used this one on my 20" duty gun for years (20" version) and it has never caused any problems. I do not know what the mag capacity is in the shorter version but it's close. http://www.amazon.com/Remington-REM-...5478681&sr=8-3 |

realize that you'll have to do the same mod whichever mag extension you choose. The express models have the dimples in the end of the magazine that won't permit a follower to pass. You'll have to grind them off, then screw on the aftermarket (or remington) mag extension of your choice.

Plus if you want to shorten the 28" bbl to 18.5 or 20" a hack saw is all that is needed. I shortened two of my bbls from 28" that way. A bit of file work and some cold blue and you're GTG.
Or you can go this way: http://www.amazon.com/Msbrg-Xbbl-870...f=pd_sim_sg_22 |

Some use the clamp keeping the extension and bbl in line. I'd have to get mine out of the safe to see if I even use one. The standard Remington extension works fine on mine. I see the point on the express. Of course, Brownells wants to sell their dent remover, so their are other options to filing the tabs. This link will show a picture of the "connector" or what I call a clamp for the bbl: http://www.cactustactical.com/osc/re...el-p-1838.html

For an 18 inch barrel, you'll need the 7-shot extension (adds 2 rounds). A 20 inch barrel will use an 8-shot (+3) and a 26 inch barrel can take the 10 shot (+5).
Both of my 870s with 20" sighted barrels use the Choate Machine and Tool extensions. These are available directly from Choate ( www.riflestock.com ) for $48.18 (7 & 8 rnds, blued and matte) and come with the spring, base (barrel-mag) clamp and hi-vis (orange polymer) follower. I've used these for 30+ years and have had no problems whatsoever with them. As a plus, you can use a long swivel screw in place of the base clamp screw to add a sling swivel (Uncle Mike's type) for a side mount sling.
If you are considering cutting down the 28" barrel to 18.5-19 inches instead of buying a new barrel, use a pipe cutter instead of a hacksaw. The pipe cutter centers itself so there's no chance of making an off-center cut and leaves only a slight ridge on the inside that needs to be cleaned up. Be advised that this does leave the barrel with no choke at all, so you'll need to pattern your shotgun to know how it shoots.

The factory Remington extension is a good piece of gear. I like the Wilson Combat/Scattergun Technologies and Vang Comp pieces much better though. As I'm one a "I don't like WC/ST" kick and I do love the Vang Comp parts, I just stick with the Vang parts.

Go with the Remington OEM front end. It stays put.

If you really want a high capacity magazine go with one of these: http://www.xrailbyrci.com/mm5/mercha...rail_remington
They hold 23 rounds. I have one on the 1100 I use for local run and gun shotgun matches.

I do use an 8 shot extension on one of my 18.5" bbls and while it looks a bit goofy it doesn't affect function of fired rounds. I also use rx mounted side saddles for extra rounds. I had a buttstock mounted that has compartments for two extra rounds on each side of the stock but if the rounds aren't rotated regularly the ends can mushroom and prevent insertion into the chamber which might increase pressures if you can get it in there.
As for the hacksaw vs pipecutter barrel pruning method I would guess that would depend on your skill level and the equipment that you have on hand. I've see people use an air powered cut off disc, too. Most folks have access to a hacksaw, but a factory barrel is ultimately the way to go. Whatever method is used results in the same end result. And as stated the barrel will be cylinder bore when complete.
Another thing to think about is what you'll do for sights. Bead? Rifle sight? There's a clamp on arrangement that includes a front sight.
You can make the conversion as fancy or as utilitarian as you desire!

My favorite at this point is the two point which allows good weapon retention and handling. Single points are great if you need to switch shoulders but bad if you need to run or transition to a sidearm. With a single point the SG is whipping around and usually makes contact with sensitive portions of the male anatomy.
Something most folks won't have to do is restraining subjects and applying locking wrist jewelry. Getting your SG in a safe and secure location is a must and with a two point the weapon can be slung over the back of the operator.

Most other places I've seen are $70+ for the Remington brand extensions. Found under Gun Parts- Remington. Comes with the extension, spring, swivel assy w/screw and coupling (barrel/tube clamp).

Mossberg make a 18.5 barrel for Remington with a muzzle Brake on them pretty cheap, I have never used one but have not heard any thing negative about them. I have used the Scatter Gun Technology/Wilson 7 and 8 round extension and the cheap ones from Choate with no problems, My 11-87 has a SGT with sling attachment built in that I really like. I also have a Vang-Comp barrel on one of my 870's that will keep a nice tight pattern with Win 00 buck shot.
