| Rem 40X Just got it yesterday
Ive always wanted a Remington 40X. I shot a 7.62 Rangemaster NM version once, but got sidetracked with other things, and never found one for sale.
Thank you CMP. This one came with a factory varnished stock. I immediately stripped it off. I didnt have too much to do to the metal. It was lightly used and well taken care of. The bore only had light dust (not rust) and cleaned up easily. Trigger is adjustable for creep, pull and overtravel. Barrel is 7/8" at the muzzle and weighs in at 12 3/4 pounds. There are two screws on the forearm at 5 and 7 o'clock to adjust tension on the free floated barrel.
I hope to shoot it next week. The barrel is 28" long and its 50 1/2" stem to stern. So its hard to photograph, but here are some pics.

In rifles, the two "Grail" guns for me were the M1A and a 40X. That's a very fine rifle. RANGE REPORT asap using the irons on it. Well done!

Thank you gentlemen. I hope all of you ordered one and if it has not arrived yet, I hope it does soon. Thank you CMP.
Here is a shot of the handstop. It didnt come with one, but I was lucky to locate a loose one.

Sure is nice wood. Any of the standard handstops should fit, right?

A Freeland handstop's square clamping end MIGHT be slightly too wide to slip into the rail. Check it first. Some original Remington rails work w/ Freelands, others don't.

Any range reports? Wondering if a 40x would fit the bill for an indoor precision rifle competition...

No Range Report yet. Still trying to time the wind and rainy weather with a time slot that comes available.
re: indoor range rifle. I doubt if I would shoot a 40X inside unless they have a bench to shoot off of. Its very heavy, very long and most do not have rear sling swivels installed so you could not sling up unless you had a Freeland cuff type sling.
You would have to set it on the bench to load it, as of course its a single shot otherwise it would get very tiring.

I bought a SB 40X from the CMP and plan to use it in this league. It did come with a rear swivel, just have to find the front hand stop now.

Oops. I stand corrected. I forgot about 22 prone position. I was thinking high power. I am sure it would be outstanding for that.

Used a Rem 40X in high school in the mid sixties when you could walk into school with your rifle cased. Shot indoor fifty foot range competition. Think it was standard barrel but can't remember back forty some odd years. Of course the enlightened ones closed the range and club and team.
