Here's a cool rig to share with you guys! This is a scarce, but very nice condition (except for the buttpad) USMC Property marked Remington 40X target rifle wearing a very rare USMC Property marked Lyman Super Targetspot scope. The rifle came from the CMP and has the original paperwork. The stock has a mismatched serial number to the receiver, but it does have a nifty USMC Shooting Team decal!

The Lyman scope is a 20x and has the proper USMC property rollmark. The USMC Super Targetspot scopes in the 17xxx range all have the "USMC Property" as a rollmark from the factory, USMC Super Targetspot scopes in the 24xxx range all have the "USMC Property" e-penciled onto the scope tube by the USMC armorers (at least this is what I have observed, I have 5 of these scopes from legit sources and they all follow this pattern).

The scope also has the original screw-on lens caps, a rubber eye piece, a small sunshade and the USMC Property marked wood carrying case. I absolutely love this set-up and have spent years trying to make this rig happen! I can't wait to get it to the range, but until then I hope you guys enjoy these pics of this unique bullseye destroying machine! DI5

That is a fine outfit. Both rifle and scope appear not to have been used much. Looks like all it is missing is a rear iron sight base.

The scope does not have a recoil spring. Never shot a rimfire without the spring and do not know if recoil slides the rifle out from under the scope (with a .30/06 it moves a lot). Check to see if you need to pull it back "into battery" after each shot.

Common problem with the 40X in the factory stock was for the center guard screw to be too long. If so it contacts the bottom of the bolt. Some think this affects precision. One of mine was this way and it definitely affected effort required to work the bolt. Some folks just delete the center screw - it is not required, or it can be trimmed.

There are two barrel bedding screws in the forearm tip. Before glass bedding receivers and free floating barrels it was common to have contact between the tip of the forend channel and bottom of the barrel. This contact put a few lbs of upward force on the barrel.

Remington put a click adjustable system on the 40X. A continuity tester/VOM was used to "zero" the adjusters. Procedure was to ground one side of the VOM on the barrel and touch the other probe to the head of the adjuster screw. If the adjuster was contacting the barrel it zero resistance. Then back it out just until it lost contact/infinite resistance. Do this on both sides. Then run it back in until contact was just reestablished and add 'X' clicks of pressure on both sides.

Some folks claim to be able to find a sweet spot with a certain amount of up force on the barrel that shrinks groups. I ran my 40X-B standard barrel with 3 clicks. Changing the number of clicks will change the POI.

I see you are in IL. The Fort Defiance R&P Club in Wyoming IL (25 mi north of Peoria) has smallbore prone 1600 matches in the summer. These are a hoot - 100 rounds at 50 yd and 60 rd at 100 yd, all slow fire prone. Here is a link to the website:

http://www.ftdefiance.org/

On the website home page are two photos. On the right is the 200 yd highpower range with pits. On the left is a photo of John Holliger coaching his son during a 50 yd stage of a smallbore prone match.

I was Match Director for smallbore at Ft Defiance thru the 2014 season. There were some transition problems in 2015 but I'm confident the smallbore program will be back on track in 2016.

If you want to shoot highpower, Ft Defiance has a nice 200 yd range with pits. Like most highpower, attendance is way down and they are always happy to see a new face.

RimfireCentral has several folks knowledgeable on the 40X. You might want to poke around there:

If you want more info on Ft Defiance, PM me.

Few of us in my area have former CMP 40X's, including me, and they were the last batch sold by CMP without bolt, triggers, stocks, etc. PT&G offers new replacement bolts and triggers not a problem to source and we meet frequently at private 200yd. range to "ring them out" so to speak. Most have original barrels on them and some are replacement barrels by Douglas(local to us) and their accuracy with good ammo is excellent at all the ranges we shoot. Mine is set up with Unertl 1.5"x16 and if wind is cooperating can get 1" groups of 5 at 100yds. Ours are stamped U.S. Property on left side of front receiver, but not per a particular Service. You have a very nice proper rig there, congratulations and enjoy it at a match.

What a treasure! While on my H.S. R.O.T.C. rifle team in the early '60's I used a 40XB "Rangemaster" .22LR, but it had the Redfield "Olympic" micrometer iron sights. I wasn't aware of a scoped version. We only fired at 50'. Thanks for posting!

I've never seen a USMC PROPERTY marked Super Target before but I will venture an estimate that it would sell for more than the USMC marked 40-X at auction. Very nice and thanks for sharing, do you have any sale documents on the rifle and scope?

I have a USMC marked 40-X and my rubber butt pad looks the same as yours, if you ever find a replacement and they have more than one please let me know. I took note of nf1e's suggestion and looked through Connecticut Shotgun's Web site but I don't see that they offer one, but I did find a repo screw set for a Winchester 1890 so I got something out of it, thanks nf1e GI1
