This weekend, I went the the CMP south store and picked up a gorgeous rifle off the rack:
Today I took it to the range for the first time to test it in.
Conditions:
Miserable. Temp in the low 20s with 20+ mph winds. The range is protected by berms so I don't think the bullets were affected that much by the wind. However the shooting platform is not, so I definitely felt the wind.
Sights:
I really liked the irons that came with it. I ended up using one of the post reticles instead of the circular ones. I probably would have done better with the circular reticle, but since this rifle is a trainer for my XTC service rifle, I figure the post was more appropriate.
Shooting position:
Our rifle range is currently shut down so I had to go to the 50 yard pistol range. There are not benches here and shooting can only be done from standing. I did use the bar height tables to ghetto rig a support for the front. Not nearly as stable as a true bench rest, but the best I could do.
Ammo:
Sighted in with a few loose rounds of federal automatch, the rest was CCI Standard Velocity. Accuracy seemed the same for both however the automatch fed a lot better. The CCI standard velocity was difficult to chamber on every round. I basically had to slam the bolt forward to chamber it. Almost 50% of the rounds went supersonic, which is similar to the results I get with the Marlin 60.
Results:
I only fired 50 rounds after sight in because of the weather. First ten rounds:
Shots felt good, and didn't call any pulls. Not sure what happened with the flyer, but I'm not too concerned about it.
Second ten after rezeroing:
Weather was starting to get to me. Shots didn't feel quite as good. My eyes were starting to freeze a bit and painful.
Rest of the box (30 rounds):
I just wanted to go home and fired as quickly as I could. Not great results, but I can't blame the rifle at all. I could not focus on the front sight at all and the target often completely blurred out.
Overall I'm quite pleased with the results. It shot relatively well with CCI SV, which is good considering I have a ton of it. I'll try with some match ammo and see how it does.
