From what I understand, there have been problems with some semi auto 17 HMR's and to my knowledge the problems weren't "brand" specific with respect to rifles or ammo.
The problem (from what the experts say) is that the bolt starts to open too soon on the semi autos in question resulting in case head ruptures (brass particles, gas escaping the ejection port) not unlike an out of battery detonation on a sub gun.
I'm not aware of any damage to weapons or shooters but that doesn't mean there hasn't been any.
All that said, my personal experience with the 17 HMR and jts use in a semi auto platform is considerable and I have never had any problems.
My rifle is a Ruger model 10/22 22 magnum converted to 17 HMR with a 22 inch factory profile Shilen barrel. I have about 3500 rounds through it with no problem whatsoever.
The preponderance of ammo fired in it has been Hornady but there has been some Speer and about 500 rounds of Remington 17 HMR through it with no ruptures.
All that was done to convert from 22 magnum to 17 HMR was change the barrel out.
