I am thinking about buying a Savage Rascal to teach my great niece and nephew to shoot when the time comes, I have a couple of 22 rifles but they are pretty big and heavy to a 4 or 5 year old. So any input would be helpful, thank you.
Bass Pro Shops has them on sale right now for $129.97 right now.

A couple months ago I attended a 4H rifle instructor certification course and they talked about this rifle and passed one around for us to look at. Generally speaking, the instructors were quite pleased with it as it seems to be actually designed for small junior shooters. The small stock/forend combined with the accutrigger made for a pretty neat setup. I didn't get to shoot it but others that did say that it did real well for what it is.

The instructors' only complaint is the rear sight makes the rifle compatible only with their "target" rifle class competition. 4H has some weird rules on competition class and anything with a peep rear sight is considered a "target" rifle as opposed to a "sporter" rifle.

I bought one too!

I too bought this little rifle since I am looking to teach my son (soon to be five) how to shoot after Christmas. Originally I was set on buying the Crickett (another single shoot .22 rifle), but I am glad I didn't. Apparently some of the youngsters find the Crickett hard to pull the cocking knob back far enough to set it to fire, where as the Rascal is cocked when you work the bolt like any modern bolt-action. Plus I like the location of the safety up near bolt handle to enforce flipping it on when reloading. This rifle had everything going for it: Easy loading, easy to work/understand the safety on & off, easy take down, adjustable accrue trigger, and a fairly good peep site. Positive click adjustments on the rear site would have been nice, but you won't get that at this price point so I can't knock it for that.

Also, the receiver is tapped for a scope mount, although I haven't seen anything offered by Savage yet, I'm sure this will be an accessory that you can pick up later. I will post a range report sometime after Christmas when my son & I take it out. This will be his first shoot and honestly I think I'm going to be more excited than him.
