Scope on JC Higgins Model 30
The Sears Model 30 does have a dovetail, but its about 5mm wide, so very hard to find an adapter or rail to fit. I did search the net for such an adapter but could not find one guaranteed to close down to 5mm.
I purchased a Hawke Sports Optics 11mm to Weaver/Picatinny Rail Adapter, about $22 at Optics Planet. Hawke # HM17015. Other units may work as there appear to be many for the 9mm air soft size.
The adapter has a screw-down clamp on one side that would clamp to a minimum 9 mm dovetail, but it won't close far enough to grip the narrower Model 30 dovetail. I put four layers of blue masking tape temporarily on one side of the jaw to position fit it. That was enough to give it a grip on the Sears dovetail.
I have a small machine shop, so I put the side clamp in my vertical milling machine and shaved off about 0.05" using an end mill, making several passes, making sure I did not damage the part that mates into the dovetail.
The Hawke rail is soft aluminum so very easy to mill. It is factory painted black, so the milled surface (shiny) is obvious but invisible once installed on the Model 30.
One has to be careful not to cut too deep or you'll mess up the recessed holes where the four Allen-screws go to secure the clamp to the adapter body.
I used lots of machining oil, which I removed with printed circuit board flux remover which was handy (any solvent should work).
It mounts on the Sears dovetail perfectly and is quite tight. I mounted a Sightmark Red Dot reflex sight (X1) on the rail.
BTW, a neighbor (well known actor) gave me the Model 30 when he moved to NY to take a job on a soap. It had been in his garage for years, unused. It sat in my garage unused for 15 years. It's a pretty nice firearm.
