| What's the quietest .22 subsonic you've found?
My two girls recently took the NRA Junior Rifle Course and now really want to shoot. Though there are a couple of clubs in the area they're not really an option right now as one club will cost me almost $400 for one year and the other, currently doesn't allow kids though they are working to change that. That leaves the back yard. I have just enough land to legally do this but, I've got one neighbor that I just don't see being OK with an extended range session.
So... what's the quietest .22 subsonics you guys have come across? I bought a brick of Remington Subsonic 38 grains, 1049 fps at the muzzle and I really wasn't impressed.
Again, talking strictly noise levels hear, not small game or ultra accurate. We'll be shooting paper targets and tin cans at 50 feet max.

Gimlet | My personal experience(YMMV! )is that .22 Ammo, perhaps Especially Including sub-sonic...often, but of course, not always!, needs to be matched to the 'weapon', rifle or pistol...
There is a built-in Contradiction between Ammo that is Quietest versus Most Readily Cycles the action...(So Bolt-Actions can sometimes overcome this issue)...
The Best Compromise for Me has been CCI 'Green-Tag' Ammo...
SOME is no doubt even quieter...but won't cycle.
IF Your Using Bolt Action .22's, that's helpful.
If Not, then 'cycling-ability' remains an issue.
But, Try the Green Tag...it works well.
If you think it's still Too Loud...
Buy Several Small Boxes of .22 Sub-Sonic Ammo that you can locate locally...and try them each separately and carefully to see which one YOU think is Quieter, But Still Cycles The Rifles!
Good Luck!

Well, I really do no know what the quietest subsonic 22 ammo would be but have you thought of using a pellet gun instead? I have a Beeman Kodiak pellet gun that is a tack driver and it is cheaper than a 22 to shoot; sound would not be a factor for you. At 20 yards, with the right pellets, the group will be a small cluster around .5". I live on a quarter acer in town and it does not bother my neighbors. I even shot a pigeon one day that was building a nest in my eve at a lazered 28 yards; a neighborhood cat ended up with that one. They can be a bit heavy so depending on how old your girls are you would need to get one that will not be too heavy for them. Check out this website: http://www.airgundepot.com/
My 10 year old daughter has a Gamo youth pellet gun and it is just as accurate as the Beeman.
Just food for thought. You could also try inviting your neighbor over to do some shooting, maybe they would like it and not be concerned with the noise? Good luck.

What you want is the Aguilla Colibri, or Super Colibri. THey are cheap, I seem to recall $1.50 per box and they have NO GUNPOWDER.
It is .22LR, it has a tiny 17 grain bullet, and it just uses the primer to shoot at 350 fps for Colibri, and 450 fps for the Super Colibri (if I recall correctly). THey advertise that you can shoot these indoors, and I have. THey will not cycle a semi auto, so you either have to hand rack each cycle, or best is to get a bolt action. Out of a rifle, the report sounds like a loud clap of the hands.
Accuracy is reasonable, especially if you are talking 50 ft range. THe bullets will barely stick in wood, so a piece of 3/4" ply is about all the backstop you need.

CCI CB Longs are quiet when fired from a 24 inch barrel; all I hear is the hammer drop and a puff. They have about the same point of aim as .22 LR out to 35 yards or so.
They throw a 29 grain bullet at an advertized 710 fps (I measured 765 fps at altitude).

Ive shot a few super colibris myself. Sounds like a pellet rifle if that, no gunpowder like stated. Absolutely impossible to cycle an action.
If you want quiet .22's, nothings going to make less noise than those.

As I understand it, any revolver will make a fair amount of noise (in relative terms) because of the gap between the cylinder and barrel--even though slight. A semi-auto will make noise because it cycles automatically.
I've been at the range and some guys had pump and bolt action .22 and the long barrel and manual action combined made those things insanely quiet. Think of someone mashing a stapler in their hand. Though I suppose I was also wearing hearing protection at the time.
But if you're, say, 150ft away I can't believe you'd ever hear them.

The Aguila Colibris are definitely the way to go. They are only powered by priming compound in the rims; no gun powder. Very quiet and reasonably accurate. I had a shooting gallery set up in my garage and the neighbors didn't even realize it or if they did, they didn't complain.

I have to give a plus one for the super colibris as well. I need to order a couple more bricks of them. I have used them for dispatch of varmints out of a rifle although I do not recommend it. They do have enough power to kill with the right shot placement. For target practice at short range to teach the basics they are wonderful. I plan to start the wife off shooting them so that we can practice without hearing protection at first.

+1 on the CCI CB Longs. They are quieter than my air gun and have enough punch to kill a crow at approx. 20 yards. Great stuff!

Went out to my mailbox yesterday, and received the Nov. 20th issue of SGN. Tom Gaylord who is the Airgun guy for SGN did a long and detailed article comparing Aguila/CCI/and RWS .22 CBs against a .22 cal airgun with a noise attenuator. To big a article to get into all the details. He compares costs to shoot/power/accuracy/and noise. He does his best to keep it "apples to apples" in the comparison. Wish there was a way to provide a link to the article, but I'm at a loss as how it can be done. Copies should still be available at your news stand/sporting goods stores. PS: Believe I have a way to make the CCI .22 CB Longs feed reliably in the Ruger 10-22 for those that are interested. dozier
