I have seen guys make a plywood tube lined with some form of sound deadening material and mount this on legs and shoot through it sitting in front of there bench, the barrel was in the tube about 6"-10", I have also seen a deflector box that had tubes on both side to deflect the noise upwards, this was used on a fifty cal rifle, it looked like it was made from 4" or 5" exauste tube with the muzzle brake centered in the tubes.

I"ve shot squirrels in towns, using CCI CB caps and a 20" barreled .22 rifle. Nobody ever complained. their meat was great, too. :-)
i just picked up some quiet bullets in .22 for that very reason. my grandmother has been complaining about squirrels tearing up her house in town. i have a 24" bolt action. that should do the trick. i just have to wait for the squirrels to be on the ground. i still feel nervous about shooting low velocity .22 up in the trees. i could try an airgun too, but i hate pumping the damn thing.
