| My first .22, have a question.
I don't own a .22 unless you count my wife's M4 carbine, and I have wanted one for a long while now. I think I have picked out the rifle that I want and at around $200, came up with the Marlin XT-22TR/MTR. Marlin-22TR.jpg
I like the bolt action and the tube feed as well as the synthetic stock. My problem is I don't know what caliber would be best. My two choices are:
XT-22TR in (all three) .22short 22long, .22long rifle or
XT-22MTR in .22wmr only
I like the idea of 3 different types of .22, but the ballistics seems way better with the magnum...of course. With no real experience with .22s I'm puttin' it out there for some input. What say you, pros and cons of caliber types?
P.S. I love the looks and configurations of the Ruger 10/22 but it's the type of gun that would get way out of control for upgrades with me... |

Get the .22 LR, not the Magnum. Regular .22 ammo is a fraction of the price of .22 Magnum ammo.

Only problem I've ever seen with a Ruger 10/22 is that most people who get one seen to feel the need to go spend $200-$500 more in "upgrades" to make it better. A basic bolt-action .22 is all you need when you're starting out, and the Marlin is a nice one.

My 10/22 is bone stock, and I don't feel the need to change anything.

Don't run right out and get a bunch of add ons and hop up parts. But get a 10/22 so you can at least do some hot mag changes. It'll be fine out of the box.............until you're good and ready. |

Well I pulled the trigger on the Marlin XT-22TR, $192 bucks. I appreciate all of the input you guys laid out there for me.
And to all of the 10/22 freaks....maybe my next one...
Thanks!

most of my shooting is done in 22lr in a M18 S&W, great for practice. I used to be a 10/22 guy but recently got into the henry lever 22s and love them

I still shoot the bolt-action Mossberg 340K .22 that I got when I was 16. It still shoots dime sized groups at 25 yards with standard non-match grade bulk ammo. The only upgrades it's gotten are getting a couple of 10-round magazines to replace the original 7-round adjustable S/L/LR mags, and replacing the 4x Weaver tip-off scope with a brighter, clearer 4x32mm Tasco. A good .22 rifle is a lifetime investment.
