M&p 15-22

My local indoor range just started rented the S&W M&P 15-22. I rented one last weekend and, one mag into it, I was in love! So, I'm just curious if its worth spending the money one?

I have an M&P 15 and the M&P 15-22 they are both set up identical so I can save money on ammo and still practice. I love them both and have never had a problem with either of them. I would say it is worth the money depending on how much your getting it for.

The M&P 15-22 is a very good way to go with a dedicated AR style .22LR. I've owned one for about a year and have around 2000 rounds through it. Easy to do. It's very reliable and digests most ammo that I've shot through it without a hiccup. My stepson and grand daughter love shooting it!

I tried a few different conversions that replace the bolt carrier assembly and found really mixed accuracy in different AR's depending on what twist was in the barrel. My old SP1 with a 1/12 did best. Clean up was horrible with all that I shot even chrome lined barrels.

I researched dedicated .22LR ARs and found the the S&W offered the best compatibility with the after market accessories that I use on my duty rifle and the best value for the price. The Smith will mount any stock or pistol grip that a standard AR does and also uses AR15 trigger control parts. The only part that doesn't fit is a Boonie Packer Redimag as I use on my duty AR. The S&W lower is just different enough that I can't mount it on my 15-22.

I think that for most the S&W 15-22 is the way to go.

I recently ordered the M&P 15 22 Performance Center rifle. It should be in this week. I am planning to use it for an AR trainer and general plinking. I am really impressed with the reviews of this rifle. I know the PC model may have some peculiar issues with the Laney Chamber but I wanted the other features.

I will be sure to post my impressions of the rifle once I get a chance to shoot it.

They are great...If you get rid of the 8MOA front sight! :) For the money I'd use a dedicated upper for an existing AR and I wouldn't spend a dine on any of the conversions.......O.L.

I got a national match pin for the front sight of my MOE Magpul front sights from Sinclair for mayby $12? That helped a little. The Magpul sights are a bit clunky but work just fine.

The only downside of the rifle is that that polymer picatinny rail doesn't seem hold the zero very well, at least for me, when putting optics on and off. Well, I didn't invest into too expensive optics either since this is just for fun, plinking and trigger practice. (Maybe I get a trigger job some day, the trigger is so so). But so far, I have very few failures. I am sure the failures I do have are primer related, not rifle related. I do think my mags are wearing out though. The M&P 15-22 needs an inserted mag to hold the chamber open and that starts to fail more and more. The mags are polymer too and might just wear out faster than steel mags. Not too much of a problem considering that 44mag.com sells them for $16 a piece. Overall this thing is super fun to shoot and digests cheap Federal ammo. Accuracy is ok out to 100 yards. Haven't tried it out any further. I don't know the MOA, but I shot a match with just the magpul backup sights, no sling! and I could hold my ground ok against bolt action rimfire rifles at 25 yards! At 100 yards standing i can hit the black of the SR-100 target with cheap Federal bulk ammo almost every time. The Ruger 10-22 seems to do much better in terms of accuracy, but if accuracy is not super critical, the M&P 15-22 is the way to go! Much fewer failures than the Ruger 10-22! At least that is my experience thus far. I have maybe 3,000 rounds through it. Love it!
