Sitting and prone radio fire question

OK, Getting back into HP competition this spring. I was into it some years back (1993-1995 or so) but got out of it for other hobbies. I recall for the rapid fire stages we had to start standing and when the targets appeared to assume the sitting or prone position as required for the stage.

I have watched several recent (past year or two) Youtube videos of the rapid fire stages at various matches and I noted that the competitors started from either sitting or prone; no dropping from a standing position. Is this indeed the rules now? All the videos that are about 2013 and earlier still have the competitors dropping from the standing position. I can't find any reference in the 2016 NRA HP rules about starting the rapid fire stages from standing either

I also noted in the more recent vids that the magazine is kept out of the rifle until the targets appear. In past I recall you could insert the mag but had to keep the bolt open until your target appeared.

In any case I would be kind of grateful if that was the case where you get seated or lie down in the prep period and get your natural POA without having to stand up. My knees are definitely more snap, crackle, pop now that I'm in my early 50's.

Thanks for any clarification on this.

Regards,
Bill

My experience about mirrors yours as I got out about the same time, and we started those strings from standing. I haven't been to a match in years so if they changed it I wouldn't know. I recall that we could insert the mag as well but not chamber until in position.

CMP you start from standing unless you have a medical waiver. I believe NRA starts in position now.

Last time I shot due to being older we did not have to obey "shooters rise" command but could stay in sitting or prone position for those two rapid fire stages. As for the magazine insertion must be done only when in position ready to fire and was told that was a safety requirement, can't have magazine inserted until down in position??? Thing I don't have clear is how they score these days on the target. I always used the miss marker at the 12 o'clock position and the 10 was at 6 o'clock position but understand that has changed as well?? Time marches on as they say.

CMP starts from standing with mag in rifle.

NRA starts from position with mag on the ground.

Current CMP and NRA rulebooks are available online.

Thanks for the info, very grateful. Sounds like the CMP vs NRA rules are different regarding both my questions.

I guess I better drop 25 lbs or so before the start of the season or my knees are going to secede from my body.

Bill

At the 2016 Project Appleseeds I was at, those with bad knees were allowed to remain in the kneel/seated while the others rose to standing. But they were restricted to not fire until at least the first shot was taken by one of the shooters who transitioned and had taken their first shot. That kept those with bad knees from having an advantage over those who were making the transition. A transition shooter must shoot first. While not NRA or HP it might help you on the Project Appleseed shoot you're going to.
