Camp Perry Legacy Matches

Ok, who's going? Anyone? I signed up for both the MM and Roosevelt matches on 13th and 14th respectively. It's my only "shot" at Perry this year. Air-lining into DTW and having a fellow die hard picking me up with all my gear that I delivered to him on the 10th, then heading to Perry in the wee morning hours. Don't ask, my schedule just sucks, just thank the Lord above for the shooting friends I have, God Bless!

Thanks from TRW1964

Art, Wishing you the Best of luck shooting the New CMP marches. What stick are you taking to the Roosevelt match, 03 or 17? Hoping it is a safe assumption that you are using the 14 on the Modern Military match.

Looking forward to reading your review of the format and attendance of these matches. It is great to see the CMP expanding and adding more matches with unique formats such as the Roosevelt match. Wondering if you will have to charge the berm to complete the match.

Hey Tom, I'll be shooting a SA M1903 for the Roosevelt match. My understanding is that you may only shoot a 03 or a Krag.

For MM, you guessed it, my std. SAI M1A. I'll be sure to give a report. Take care.

TCAF, I will be at the MM Match. Have you checked the latest WX forecast? It might get very interesting. Rick

I have, but I'm a cynic on Wx forecasting this far out. Hopefully it'll adjust for the good.

Thanks Earl!

Earl, I will bring my rain jacket and that will deter the thundershowers. At least that's what happens most of the time. If I don't bring it, there will certainly be rain and lots of it. Shoot well! Rick

Showers and thunderstorms likely. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Cloudy, with a high near 84. West wind 10 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Hey Earl, the CMP decided to shorten the match to a course "A" from the org. course "B" before we started to beat the WX , and it worked. Just as we were coming out of the pits after the final relay, the rain started and then really started coming down. We all got soaked coming off the range, but everyone finished. I shot pretty crappy, but still had a lot of fun. I just need to start shooting more!

I would like to mention, that although this was supposed to be a MM match, to follow MM rules, we saw a lot of rifles that did not comply with MM rules, i.e. AR NM A2s, and the like. The CMP was doing "rifle inspections", but the only thing that got weighed were triggers. I guess the CMP decided to allow the non-conforming rifles for attendance, but there were still only 42 shooters.

Kind of the same thing on Sunday for the Roosevelt match. It was "supposed" to be shot with either a Krag or a M1903 ONLY, but a lot of M1903A3s showed up and were allowed to shoot. The CMP did say that next year 03A3s would be turned away and not allowed, though the match program for this year clearly stated it was a Krag or 03 only match. Results are posted on the CMP website.

Still enjoyed the weekend and the comraderie (sp?) with the guys from MI and elsewhere, and the folks from the CMP ran a good couple of matches. Next year these matches are going to be incorporated into CMP week according to the sched., which will be better.

Thanks from TRW1964 and 4th award expert

TCAF, I guess I'm one of the reasons that there was crappy attendance. I looked at the WX forecast late Friday evening and decided to stay home. I had the truck already loaded up but figured that there was no way that they could run 4 relays with the long course given the WX forecast of heavy rain and thundershowers. I guess maybe I should have gone. Rick

TCAF,
Thanks for the review of the new CMP matches held at Perry this weekend. Glad to read that you are not made of sugar and willing to shoot in the rain, I was on the fence and decided to stay dry Saturday morning.

I'm sure the CMP will get the word out on what is an allowable firearms for each match next year. Got to wonder if the 03A3 shooters were aware of the difference between their stick and a 03? The CMP could allow for class differences in the MM match as they do I the Garand Match with NM competing on their own. A NM AR14 at 200 yards is a bit of cheating, in my humble opinion.

42 shooters is a small turnout but given the weather and how the matches were scheduled it is not surprising that the numbers were low. Any word on attendance Thursday and Friday? Next years attendance should be better as the CMP ties these new matches together with the current set we've been shooting.

Tom, with my work schedule, or lack of I should say, I have to shoot whenever the opportunity presents itself, even if I have to airline it in! So, I don't disparage anyone for not shooting when the WX rears it's ugly head!

My shooting partner/ride from DTW called it when we got up and looked at the radar in the morning. Exact words were, "the CMP needs to make this a course A", and they did.

My contention with the 03 is that "IF" you shoot CMP matches one should know the difference between the rifles, IMHO. I was even concerned about my 03 because it has a "C" stock and I scoured the rules 2 days before the match to make sure it would be legal. The CMP did make it somewhat right by telling those with 03A3s they needed to write in that they were shooting that rifle on their scorecard, FWIW.

As far as the MM goes, the CMP rules are way too vague and need to be tightened up, even with what mags an M1A/M14 is allowed to use. A lot of guys were using the 10 rounders and there was some bitichin about that as well from some of the others. I guess we'll see...

I certainly agree that the rules are confusing. However, there were folks shooting M1's and NM M1A's (as seen in the CMP photos) so even rifles that should have been easily identified as not authorized for the match were being used. The CMP spends time generating confusion and restrictive rules but obviously doesn't bother enforcing the rules they generate. Rick

Rick, the guys I shot with were also confused by the lack of enforcement by the CMP. We saw NM ARs on the line as well. I think the CMP was more concerned with competitor numbers than enforcing the rules of the match. It was still a good time.
