10 ring at 600 is 12" (prone)
10 ring at 200 is 7" (standing, sitting on a nm course)

Good equipment helps, but most of the onus is on the shooter.

Thanks from arcticdog and JEFFJP_N_JJ

Not saying that I could ever do that well but I imagined the top shooters shooting tiny groups. Sure would like to see some groups if anyone decides to post any pics.
Yep.
Very few rifle and ammo combinations are even capable of 1 moa no matter who is shooting them.
That is of coarse unless you are one of the sub minute tack driver all day long dudes that uses grandpas 30-30 after cleaning the cob webs and oiling the rust.

In 7 years at Perry I've seen 1 (one) 10x clean. Pretty rare event. The Marine who fired a 500 clean this year in the NTT broke a 34 year old record that was a 499. That's in over 100 years at Perry. Remember, this is position shooting with a sling, no artificial support out to 600 yards, not bench-rest.

First pic is the Garand match while we were waiting for search and rescue to get wrapped up.

Second pic is of geeck's protégé(far right) with a spotter where it belongs on his target (59 if you zoom in you can see it center x). Kind of a weird angle. Kid did damn good with that heavy beast (03).

Just curious if he was using optics on his rifle? I was reading that article and it didn't see it mentioned.

Also, does anybody know if they used the electronic targets in any matches this year?

Don't know about optics on the Marine in the NTT. The 10x clean I saw was three years ago, so no optics. Electronic targets on the zeroing range on Petrarca, none on Viale or Rod.

its shot for score not group. And from position not a bench. And in real life not on the internet.

Gots to remember that there is a difference between a rifle capable of shooting 1MOA or better, and a shooter shooting 1MOA or better (especially in the off-hand).

Further, for most of the CMP matches (e.g., M1 Carbine, Vintage Military, As-Issued Garand), I doubt if the majority of rifles used were even capable of shooting 1MOA or better. And as shown by my scores, obviously none of my rifles were. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Thanks from arcticdog and evilgrin

Certainly they are capable of MOA or less IF the stock and barrel are fit properly, the barrel is in excellent condition, the rifle:ammo combo is ideal, the sights are functioning properly, etc. Much rifle:ammo prep, benchwork, and position shooting will be needed to select said rifle.

As a friend of mine replied, when asked how his M1 Garand shot so well, "First you start with 10 M1 Garands..." He is a collector and shooter, so he was able to test each, modify the stock:metal fit, etc. and choose the pick of the lot.

Thanks from Duce
