MISO inserts for M1A/M14
Has anyone ever used these and how well do they work on a full XTC?
You might also want to run this in the vision sub-forum.
I would also like to know if anyone has used this.
Wolley is using one. Shot his M1A across the course last Sunday using the MISO sight for the first time. I'll wait for him to articulate his experience with one.
I got one of the first ones sold in June and installed it on my National match M1A. It worked so well for me that I installed another on my Garand, and a hood kit on my AR. I am near sighted and wear bifocals. At 59 years old I had the "water spot" problem with all but the standard service rear sight and a blurry front sight on top of that. Just installing this insert picked my scores back up twenty points the first time out. On the negative side, you do lose some brightness from your sight picture so I had to learn to adapt to that. It has not been a problem on the M1A with a .595 aperature. The AR hood kit comes with a standard for that rifle .040 aperature which I found too dim for me on a cloudy day. I changed that out for an .046 insert and that solved the problem. My "water spot" is still there, but very much fainter, and actually now helps draw my eye to the center of the sight picture. I had tried other lens inserts in the past, but was not satisfied with them. On my service rifles I use the rectangular sight aperatures from "Shooting Sight" with great results. One other thing to take note of is the MISO insert only works with a post front sight. It will NOT work with any other style of front sight. Best wishes to you!
Have used the lens in hood combo for several years. Use to be marketed by a fellow known as Bob Jones(perhaps he still does offer them??) and they do help for those w/ vision issues. You can specify the magnification and don't know for sure now, but have one which is amber in color. Helps me on overcast, dreary light conditions. Key thing is seeing that post very clearly w/ best possible contrast against the target face and the lens works for me.
I bought the AR style hood kit. My M1A has had it's sight drilled and tapped for a 1/4-32 hood.
Rifle21 is spot on with his evaluation.
I use a Microsight in my ARs. Those and the MISO have a very similar sight picture improvement.
The differences are;
The microsight gives a better post but takes target clarity away to the point that shooting at 600 can be an issue.
The MISO has a noticeably sharper target image but the post is not quite as crisp as the microsight.
The Microsight is hypersensitive to alignment. It has to be absolutely and perfectly perpendicular to the rifle and the target.
The MISO does not have this limitation and can be used with the M1/M1A.
I like and feel like it was worth the price.
Now a comment on the NM M1A sight. Ditch it and get a 1/2 minute disc.
Drill and tap the rack for an AR hood.
.008" of sight movement is 1moa on our rifles. Typically most of the NM sights have at least .004" slop in the hood.
Thanks to all. I just ordered one will see how well it works for me.
Well it came in today. Took about 5 minutes to install. No place to shoot right now but sighted it at some distant objects. All I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!!! I feel like my eye is 19 again. Now to go shoot it in match next week. This ought to be fun!!!
Just a quick question.....are the 1/2 minute discs CMP SR legal?
Thanks! Who supplies them? Fulton?
Got 1/2 minute discs on all my match prepped M1 and M14 types. Fulton and Creedmoor Sports carry them.
If you do try the 1/2 minute disc don't try superglue. It won't work.
I tried it.
Bite the bullet and use epoxy.
