Service Rifle Competition questions

I was just wondering if there was some sort of typical length for a small service rifle match. For instance if the match started at 9am would i be able to expect to get to work by 2 if i had to? I realize length probably depends on the number of competitors but figured it would be worth a shot. thanks in advance

Depends.

Generally a walk and paste match at 200 or 300 yards is done pretty quickly. If the range has a full target pit, it takes longer because of pit changes. Generally the matches start at 8AM and getting out by 1 is doable so long as the line and pit are running smoothly. On days with heavy relays, you'll be there longer.

It really depends on the range and the number of shooters. The quickest match I've ever done was maybe 8 to noon. 100 yard reduced, modified Garand match. Two relays. I've also spent twelve hours on the range at Perry. Across the course local match is typically an all day affair; usually three relays, 40 to 50 shooters. If time is an issue, high power isn't a game you want to play. Don't forget to factor in travel time. The nearest range to me that can run a legit across the course match is over an hour away.

Call the match director. He should be able to give you a pretty good idea.

Bottom line, if you need to be somewhere and the match is still going, leave. No harm no foul. If you are done, you get a score, if not you are DNF. It's just a sport right? Don't get stressed out, enjoy it.

One qualifier to that, though, is that you should only plan on doing this if it is a walk-and-paste match. If there are pit targets, you need to plan on being there for the whole match so even if you stop shooting, you can do your target pulling duty. If you absolutely have to leave early, and know about it ahead of time, at least give plenty of notice to the match director and the shooters on your firing point.

I agree the best bet is to ask the Match Director since he/she will know how that particular club's matches run.

For me, especially since I have to travel 2+ hours to get to a match, I just consider it a good day with friends and block the whole day on the calendar.

Thanks Tim, I only attend walk and paste matches and didn't think about pit pulling duties. It is always best to announce your time deadline to the match coordinators before hand.
