| Camp Perry NRA M1A Match
This summer at Perry, I was surprised when the firing of the M1A match went from prone slow fire to sitting rapid fire. The NRA rule book (page 5 : http://www.nrahq.org/compete/RuleBooks/HPR/hpr-apdx.pdf ) and the match program (page 74: http://issuu.com/compshoot/docs/2011nranationalmatches ) both list the match as going prone slow fire --> prone rapid fire --> sitting rapid fire and then lastly, standing. To add to the confusion my buddy sent me a link to a doc that shows the way it was run (PSF, SRF, PRF, OH): http://www.nrahq.org/compete/sponsors/m1a-info-old.pdf
This was my first go at Perry and I was wondering if others noticed that as well? Has the match always been fired in this manner over the last few years?
I think it should start with prone slow then prone rapid then go to sitting rapid after the prone stages. I think this would be the natural flow.
I am the match director in Missoula MT and want to construct our second annual M1A match to be similar to the way the NRA does theirs. However, "flow" is important to me to make sure things go smoothly and efficiently in a match. I am not sure which way I will build the match program. I hope to hear some responses that might sway me one way or the other on this matter.
In other news:
To let the cat out of the bag a little early, I THINK we are going to have a TRW bolt to raffle off at the June matches this coming year. You will have to be present to win, and the other details are being worked out. This match will be in conjunction with our state service rifle championship, and EIC 'leg' match.
Come to beautiful Montana and shoot a match this coming Summer! |

Hey Jamey, I've shot 4 out of the 5 M1A matches at Perry and it seems the format changes every year. One year it's RFP after SFP and the next it's RFS then back to RFP. I don't think they really know which way to run it to be honest, though I agree that RFP makes more sense after SFP. The first year of the match we did multiple pit changes in a monsoon and the match took forever. At least they've decided to run the match all the wat thru now for each relay.
Our club also runs an annual M1A/M14 match once a year in early June. When I had the scorecards printed up, I had the printer put the RFP stage after the SFP stage and that is how I run the match. I figured I'd just run our match the most efficient way possible for our shooters. Our cards look exactly like the ones they use at Perry otherwise. If you'd like one to copy let me know and I'll mail you one. Good luck with your match, i hope other clubs will start shooting them too. Regards,

Art,
Thanks for the info. I am going to send a note to SAI, and see if they are the ones responsible for the match structure. Maybe its the NRA, but I will start with SAI.
I will let you know what I find out.

J Dub, I'm pretty sure the NRA has the final say on the structure, but it would be nice to have the match run a specific way every time regardless. There has been way too much confusion for a match that has been run for 5 years. Anxiously waiting to hear what you find out. Regards,

I agree, it was sort of stupid the way they ran the sequence. I've only shot it twice, this year and the first one was in 08 I think. We shot the 500 yard F Class target back then and do not recall what the sequence was.
jameydan,
My buddy Ray Diaz and I might make at least a match in Montana. Post your 2012 schedule so we can plan accordingly.

Nez, Art,
I think I am going to run the M1A championship with the two prones back to back then go to sitting and then standing.
I just checked my email, no word from customer service at SAI, but I bet the lady that received my email is trying to figure out whom to pass that note on to. If nothing from them in a week, I will try the NRA Comps division.
Janet Raab was running the high power at the NRA, but she left. Does anybody know who replaced her?
Nez,
The Missoula schedule is slightly in flux with the particulars of some of the weekends, but I can give some info now. The schedule should be finalized in 2 weeks.
The dates are certain:
Memorial Day weekend 2012 - May 25-28th, NRA pistol match, XTC and LR matches. Order TBD
June 22nd M1A Championship
June 23rd XTC state service rifle championship, + 800yd match
June 24th Presidents 100 course (team match) followed by EIC leg match
Sept 21-23rd Long range and F-class Regional
More details will be posted when the particulars are all ironed out, but the June matches are when I hope to have the M1A/M14 prizes in addition to the regular awards. The Memorial Day weekend matches are close to sellouts. The Sept regional has been sold out the last 2 years.
Montana is a great place to visit, especially in the Summer. Missoula is about 2 hours from Glacier National Park, a great place to sight see, and Yellowstone is not much further away. They are just 2 of the big places to visit. There are numerous other places less traveled that are great to visit too.
Between the 7 active high power ranges in the state, there is a match just about every weekend, from April to the end of Sept.
I hope to see you guys up here.

As a follow up: I received an email from SAI and then from Trey Tuggle at the NRA.
The response I received was "good" from Mike Doy at SAI, and he felt that the NRA needed to get this issue of SRF/PRF straight (I am paraphrasing).
He then forwarded it to several folks at the NRA, and I got a short answer from Tuggle: "……We will take your input under consideration when making the 2012 National Match Program. "
Hopefully, he is sincere and will get this ironed out, and consistent.
I encourage anyone else that is concerned to express so in an email to Tuggle at: TTuggle@nrahq.org |
