| Camp Perry M14 Rattle Battle Team
On Friday, August 5, just after Colors and not long after sunrise, seven members of this forum were at the 600 yd. firing line. Its a tense moment, heart pumping, trigger finger ready, waiting for the small Echo Target to appear. Suddenly, it does; you get a few well placed shots off before the smoke from surrounding shooters and neighboring teams obscures the targets. The choice: do you trust your natural point of aim or wait to the next stage? You've only got 50 seconds to send your shots at each one of the four stages. More to follow from Got 7.62? Team.

You need a combination of speed and accuracy that is hard to do with a 30 cal rifle. It's all you can do to stay on top of that beast. Controlling the recoil in a rapid fire sequence with the M14/M1A is tough. This is the reason the mousegun dominates this event... but what fun is that Of course there is strong but friendly competitive streak in all the team members. However getting to shoot with folks like Arcticdog and the rest of our team is what it's all about. I hope to do it again next year. |

I think next year I'm going to need a set of thermal imaging goggles to see through the smokescreen you upwind guys laid out! Couldn't see the number boards at 600 after about 5 rounds. Geez, what were you burning? Coal? Black powder?

We mostly have Arcticdog to thank for them, without his efforts they wouldn't have happened. They were custom printed for our team. There were only 6 printed that I know of, one for each shooting member of the team.

The good news is, this isn't copyrighted or trademarked. The bad news is, once you wear the shirt, the Rattle Battle will call you onto the field, like the addiction it is. oh yea...

Never mind the shirts, back to the team pic. Who allowed that midget in the foreground to shoot that stick that is almost as tall as he is. Next time make sure someone puts some sandbags behind his feet so the recoil from that bug gun does not push him back all the way to commercial row.

Thanks,

PS. Don't let these BS artists fool you about how much fun it was. We had to be on the line at 6:15. In the morning! This wasn't a cocktail hour shoot, these guys were dead serious. They actually practiced. Sure, now that I think back on it, it was fun, but at the time I had some choice names for these guys :-)
Looking forward to next year - maybe I'll actually shoot.
Best,
Art

That picture in the pits really shows how much fun it can be pulling targets in a Rattle Battle. When the bullets start flying it's like someone's shoveling dirt on you from the berm impacts. Most folks use the scoreboard to cover their heads. And because we usually shoot the 200yd Fox targets, our rifles end up going into the pits with us, so it's wise to protect your rifle from the dirt too.
Doesn't that sound like loads of fun guys? |
