Well your prone position is different for 300, 600, 8, 9, and 1k. And again different for course and ITT. Lots of tricks for each stage. Everything changes due to rythme and recovery, sight and trigger time, NPA, and breathing. An aggressive position also works for the slow rapid fire 10 shots in 70 secs, or the single fire at 6, 8, 9 and 1k. But are you capable to hold the position for the duration. The position pictured allows you to breath and your front sight never leave the aiming black, critical to be on stage.

Youre right a good position can compensate for all your other bufoos, example I was hung over, sleep deprived on the long line outside Vegas at 1k and still shot a bronze. Learn the positions and half your problems are solved.. fun stuff

Prone Position

I've been practicing positions at home and dry firing....I can really see the importance of NPA. In prone I have a hard time getting a good solid position...

If I make my hold and position feel rock solid (butt stock firm in shoulder, sling tight) and relaxed (elbows in natural position) I get a great NPA but I'm pointing at the ground in front of me (but I feel like I could hold it that way indefinitely). To get the sight picture up I start to compromise stability, that I'm "up on the tippy toes of my elbows" and more wobbly. Almost like the LOP is too long for me (M14)??

How can I get my muzzle up, while still feeling a solid, relaxed hold? I've tried different sling lengths/tensions, even a pad under my support elbow...?

I've been shooting for about 9 years now and still go over the fundamentals every time I get to have some range time. Seems the moment I square away one aspect, be it breathing or what have you, I have to refocus on something else that I start slacking on.

Improving you marksmanship abilities is a constant process. While I was in the Air Force it used to drive me nuts how certain folks would only shoot for the two yearly qualifications and complain that they weren't improving.
