Federal Ordnance - Serial Number vs Model Number

Federal Ordnance had several model designations for its M14 type rifle. Given sufficient time and enough serial numbers, we may be able to discern some reasoning or order to the model numbers. If you would like to contribute to this, send me a PM. I'll delete your PM and not disclose the source. Like the other data bases that I have compiled, I DO NOT share who sends me what and I don't keep the correspondence. If you find a Federal Ordnance receiver heel photograph on one of the auction boards, send me the link. TIA

I'll start this data base with serial numbers and model numbers I have observed first hand or have photographs of. Note that Federal Ordnance made receivers for Century Arms International as well.

I added serial number 8435 thanks to anonymous donor.

It's looking like M14A was used for receivers assembled with USGI parts except for commemorative rifles that were given the model designation M14. If the letter "C" or "S" appears in the model name, it's a receiver that was machined for assembly with a Chinese bolt and Chinese barrel.

Fed Ord

I have Federal Ord. #21873.Marked M14SA. Belonged to my brother-in-law who died in 1987. Not sure how long he had it. No name on any parts, just serial numbers, none of which match. Inside the charging handle(for lack of proper name) the date 2/11/51 is scratched.

Fed Ord cont

I also found that the stock is bent/warpped to the right and the action and trigger group won't fit my other stocks. Compared to a new SAI plastic stock.

FS appears to be rough in finish, smaller hole dia and no markings.

Ideas on what I have here?

Yep, I was going to take a shot at that one as well, but it went a little too high in my opinion. According to the research, I'm pretty sure that one would have been outfitted with all usgi parts, but you never know. I would have taken the chance at 8 or 900 but for $1300, I agree with you, not buying it sight unseen.
