Yep I talked to Vickie at SA INC this am due to me finding out the born on date for my "new" rifle 13979x, figured what the heck and asked her about my other one. She gave me the same date that another lady gave me last year when I bought it from a private individual! I also noticed the SNAFU in the born on data base.

On an interesting side note Vickie told me that ALL SA INC bolts are investment cast to include bolts marked F, B, A She went on to say that this is what she was taught in training, and that the only bolt's that are forged where in fact USGI Holy moley does the confusion ever end...Dang

Okay, I've updated the serial number list. Thank you for the confirmation and quick reply. Thank you for Vickie's statement on the SA, Inc. bolts. This is not in total agreement with an August 2004 report from the SA, Inc. Customer Service to Walt Kuleck. The statement given to Walt Kuleck by SA, Inc. Customer Service was that the F series are forged, the B series are machined from bar stock and the A series were investment cast.

I could be very wrong but the photo of Cornbread2's bolt failure, a "B" series bolt, leads me to believe his bolt was not cast because of the way the fracture line was made. IIRC, it was a longitudinal crack of the right lug with a fairly even/flat vertical surface. A cast piece would have a more uneven fracture surface it seems but again I could be wrong. Any metallurgists out there please correct me!

You know Dif, I have been looking at a F marked bolt and an A marked bolt all day (off and on) and i can't tell a difference between them (even with a magnifying glass)
Heck I don't guess it matters as I have an HR T bolt to go in her.
I would agree with you on the mysterious Cornbread bolt, though. It looks as if it were cast it would have been more jagged. IIRC, it was more like a flush crack.
Have a good one ol' friend!

Thumbs up

IIRC, the report from Fulton Armory on Cornbread2's bolt was that it was not a cast piece. They didn't say it was machined from bar stock or that it was forged but that it was not cast by examination of the failure surface. There's other very interesting information in the works that I'm working on plus I have been given another M14 research assignment to take on. I'll let this sleeping dog lay for now.
