Again, thanks Bill, Different and others for the facts. I really DID think the bodies were plastic, but closer inspection does reveal a fiberglass composition. I'm just thankful I managed to legally aquire an original piece of history! God willing, we'll be able to hold onto our beloved toys and not have to cave in to the "gun-grabbers"!!

If I understand correctly, your unit had in stock for issue M8A1 bayo. scabbards made by Atlanta Cutlery, a well known maker of fake scabbards, as stated above.

So, if units of the US Military are issuing imitation scabbards, does that then make these scabbards genuine USGI and not imitation?

NO, that is NOT what I said in any way. What I said was that AFTER we boxed up the old ones, Atlanta Cutlery BOUGHT them as military surplus from the VTNG. Our M8A1 scabbards and M7 bayonets were genuine military issue, as you can clearly read from the previous posts. I am not sure of the exact ship dates from Vermont to them was, but it's been a while now since we turned them in the the QM.

I hope this clears up any confusion.

I don't mean to get anyone excited, in the future I'll read posts more attentively before posting

No problem my friend! I'm not mad by ANY means!!

I have a friend who works in the QM shop at Colchester and he sorta keeps me abreast of what goes where. Some stuff gets turned into the "absolute" HQ's for disbursment, other stuff he gets to send out as directed. I've seen a whole crapload of stuff turned over and we have no idea where it really goes! That's Uncle Sam for ya!!

Well that depends upon your values. If one unit has an item that was designed, developed and purchased under government contract, and another purchases an "off the shelf" commercial item, does that mean both items are US GI Issue?

If you said yes, then everything in creation is US GI, because at one time or other almost everything in existence has been purchased and used by some military unit, somewhere.

I know this is an old post but after reading this am feeling good about my purchase as it's #2 and came with a new bayonet. Even has an OD leg tie that unfortunately has a nick that's frayed a little near one of the ends and has a little rust stain from the metal grommet. Only paid $30.

Thumbs up Us m8a1 wp

I purchased a nearly mint aerial M6 some years back and noticed the scabbard had a cheesy kind of look to it. With Bills help and the Bayonet Points Index I got er figured out. Thanks Bill
