Don't be afraid about sending your M14 off to a reputable smith. Just because you can drive there doesn't mean he's any good. If you knew as much as they did and you want to supervise, you'd do the work yourself.

I don't know if this counts but I have been working on M-14s for several years and am getting pretty good at it. I live near the Canadian border in Washington state and have a couple friends who are considered among the premiere M-14 gurus in Canada. I have re-barrelled, re-indexed, set op rod guides and gas assemblies to NM specs, checked headspace and honed bolt assemblies for minor headspace adjustment, and tuned trigger groups, as well as installed various accessories. I do not charge anything and would work on your rifle with you present and helping so that you can learn more about how it works and how to do all this stuff that can seem so mysterious. I have a lot of the right tools and am open to buying more as I need them.

If you are in my area (Whatcom County) send me a PM and we can set up a meet to do your work.

I am also thinking about starting a semi-regular group get together where everyone could bring their rifles and we could have a barbecue and talk about how to do the work. Let me know if you'd be interested and I'll put your name on the list for a direct contact. My experience in Canada has been that it is great to get a bunch of guys together to socialize, learn something, and have fun doing it.

Awards Showcase

I only suggest people I know who do good work. Nothing against those whose work I haven't seen, but I want to see some work before I recommend someone.

Another in Ohio.

Mark Kovach in Oak Harbor - pretty close to Camp Perry. He advertises he does Garand work, but he also barreled a heavy barrel M14 barrel for us at Camp Perry last year since we don't have a lathe up there and he has pretty much a full gun/machine shop set up. Since much of the work on a Garand and M14 are similar, he is worth checking out.

He built a full on double lug for me. Good turnaround and it shoots great.

Georgia's Best

Don't forget Ol Hook Boutin over there in Bremen, Georgia. He is the retired armorer from Fort Benning and is a true magician with the M1A or the Garand. He is 82 years old and won't be around for many more years, but he is the best.
