The rifle is a loaded model off the shelf with a walnut stock and a harris BRS bipod attached to where the front swivel use to be, vortex viper pst 6-24x on a basset mount. The ammo is 178gr AMAX seated at 2.80 in Lapua brass trimmed to 2.00 velocity is 2650 avg. Firing position was off the bipod on a bench.
The thousand groups were 9.36" for the 7oclock group and 9.84" for the center group. I still have some breathing issues to work on because as you can see most of the dispersion was vertical.
Wow, that's pretty impressive. The Army's Marksmanship Unit just had a member that registered a new record, 200-10x, that was 10 out of 20 shots in a 10" X ring at 1000 yards with a match AR, shooting jacket, sling, etc. If you could hold that group using 10 shots or so you would be right in there with a national level long range competition shooter.
Excellent load but I'm wondering how you get that kind of speed form them. I've used the same load and I only get in the area of 2550 fps from mine. I use new Lapua brass and Federal 210M primers, how about you? What do you use to measure the speed with?
Wow I suck 2550fps is my average velocity measured from an ancient F1 shooting chrony. Sorry for the typo. I neck size my lapua brass and use 2 thousanths neck tension with 210M primers. I would love to see 2650 out of it because it would keep me further away from transonic at 1K here in georgia.
I was wondering about that number, but even at 2550 fps the bullet should still be running around 1170 fps at 1000 yards so it's not dropping below super sonic speeds unless the weather became really screwy.
I gotta' tell ya' when I first saw your post and your claim I was very skeptical, and I still wonder how you did it with that setup because I honestly don't think that the bipod or the cheek rest are all that great, but your numbers all make sense and I know that the load is one of my most accurate. There is a specific number I look for when I create a load for the 22" barrel and this load is on the money. I've found that when my QuickLOAD software predicts this number you usually end up with very tight groups and a really dependable load.
I am impressed. I've only fired that load out to 800 yards, you just reinforced my confidence that it should work pretty well out to 1000.
Im ok with skeptics haha I deal with alot of them at hard rock especially since most of the were shooting multi million dollar sleds. My first trip out there I was told I would not hit the 800yd plate and I set the rifle up plugged the numbers into the shooter app dialed the dope and squeezed...ding .2 mil low quick adjustment and 4 shots later I had made about 10 believers that day. The cheek piece by the way hasnt been on the rifle for awhile it is fitted with a karsten Atype piece.
How the heck does a Navy EM get to be such a good hitter? Of course some might ask how a Marine Avionics guy can shoot so I guess it's just something that you just pick up.
I always question everything, I also expect people to question me so I take no insult nor do I intend to insult others, it's just good communications as far as I'm concerned. I'm also up front about it, I wont say something behind a person's back that I'm not willing to say to their face.
Haha a navy nuke at that most of nukes are computer geeks. I am a submariner RAMMAC so thick skin is in my nature I didnt read your questions at all offensive. My sole purpose in the shooting world right now is to prove to people that you dont need a $7000 bolt rifle to make decent hits.
My only advise to people is to shoot what you have and spend less of your precious time at the bench making perfect ammo and more of it behind the trigger.
I get it now <----engineer we dont use ammo boxes we use trash cans. Well Im still a young punk at a young age of 26. I have been in the Navy for 9 years now hoping to put on chief shortly. I have been shooting my whole life mostly in the back yard hitting things that my brother would call off to me. I became infatuated with the M14 when I first saw it on Full Metal Jacket. I could never afford one until I joined the Navy. I shot for a few years again nothing competetive just random distances at random targets. Then I met a friend who was bragging about his 284 winchester that he had about 7k wrapped up in and I was devoted to prove him wrong. So I ripped the M14 down figured out exactly how it worked and before I knew it was pressing bullets into brass and shoving them in the chamber because I had learned that this rifle has few flaws.
I dont roll my own yet. Someday hopefully. It makes misses easier to take too, I just blame the current old milsurp crap Im shooting! GI1 Ill be looking for your posts!GI5
