In about 2 weeks I am going out to do some long range work. I will let you know how it shoots. By the way I am new to M1A's and this forum. Is there a place to post a range report in particular?

I have shot a lot of bolt action 308's. It will be interesting to see how the M1A stacks up against a Remington 700 or a Savage scout, both of which I also own and are very good rifles.

Welcome to the forum. Nice rifle.

In case you are not aware, the .308 round you shoot through your 700 or Scout may not be such a good thing to shoot through your M1a.

You know its funny. The literature for this rifle says it shoots 7.62 by 51. But the rifle barrel is labeled .308 winchester. I need to find out what I need to shoot in it. I have to admit I am a bit confused. I will shoot only what the manufacturer recommends. Whatever that is.

You can shoot both but the 7.62 has a thicker case which is desiened for semi auto and full auto rifles and firearms so that would be the recomended thing to use. However it will except the .308 round and shoots just as well with this, and .308 is more abundent at local hunting supplies stores rather than 7.62 which you would have to go to a store with more millitary type rifles.
Good Shooting.

Yeah I have looked over the data. and for commercial rounds as long as you do not go over about 170 grains its should be safe. I personally don't shoot any 308 ammo over 168 grains. and I will always start out at a lighter 308 ammo like a 147 or 150 grain for this rifle first time out for an initial test to make sure the rifle functions.

I have some S and B 308 147 grain FMJ boattail for the first time out. When I get to the range in AZ I will switch to 168 grain Hornady TAP or similar.

Thanks !

Sounds like you are on the right track. If you want some additional information, and perhaps a headache, might check this thread out, if you haven't already.

7.62 X 51 cartridge vs. .308 Winchester: the differences!

At some point you might look at Federal Gold Medal Match. It is kind of the commercial standard for accuracy comparisons.
