Question Gun Photos and Serial Numbers

I have noticed many photos of guns have the serial number blocked out. Other than personal preference, is there some reason for doing this?

It's a form of modesty, I am sure. And we like to keep Big Brother guessing. - 251XXX

Did you just make this number up? If you didn't did it come off of an M1A?

I ask because mine is in the 251XXX range as well.

I blur mine out. Just one of the things I consider to be private and don't want floating around the internet.

Yes, pretty much towards the last of the 251XXX range shipped May 2010.

Here she is... this puppy loves to shoot:

I can't see any big reason to obscure numbers. However, I believe the practice is quite strong the handgun forums also. There is always a line of comfort regarding what folks chose to share on the internet. And most folks feel comfortable with the 999XXX format.

Here is another discussion on another forum. No great revelations here either: http://www.defensivecarry.com/forum/...al-number.html

Interesting. Ours must be made pretty close together because mine is towards the last of the 251XXX range as well.

yeah the numbers game, just as you wouldn't put your kids Soc.Sec.#, wifeys CreditCard #, your Drivers Lic#, familys' Telephone# out there for all to see, it just seems to make prudent sense not to give up your rifles' personal info either cuz ya just never know who's paying attention. and I for one respect my rifle and its' privacy, just saying.
Were just kinda tight that way,as some here will agree.

I wonder how many people who are so cautious to block out serial numbers...are the same people who are on Facebook with their entire life in pics up for everyone to see? Here's my house, my family, my cars...here's my job and what I do on the weekends. Oh, but it's cool cause I only let "friends" see my page.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiight.
