Navy Issue M21 Scope

I have been racking my mellon guts over this for some time. I can't find any descriptions of the issued M21 Kits we used as DMR's. This was mid-late 80's. Pretty sure they were Match Grade. They came from NSWC, CRANE DIV in aluminum cases. With Mcmillan advertisement card and Leupold sticker inside...; ) No kidding....

What I can't recall is the mount used, and which Leupold 10X was used. I have old photos, somewhere. My bud I'm still in touch with doesn't remember.

They were Leupold, 10X, one inch tube, Mil-Dot, don't recall bell diameter but want to say 42MM. Also, the turrets were covered.

Anyone know? Anyone here work Depot level maint (Ordnance) at CRANE or know someone who did?

Going to have to look for my course binders. Maybe they will say but descriptions are usually not detailed (IE: Scope, Rifle, 10X)

I can confirm, in my case, 10X with covered turrets. However, I regret that I never put much attention on the specifics of the parts. I never even considered that one day I might see the M14 as a hobby. Fine weapon system!

Gads......just had to be a Gunners Mate.....; )

Well if he was CRANE DIV maybe he can recall if he was assigned within the capacity to know....or know where to find out. Everything we received in/shipped out was via CRANE DIV.

Exactly. What command did you have issued M21s? I was at Miramar Station Weaps Range/Armory Div. Received them for Base Security/ASF. The "improvised" DM course was up the road at Pendelton.

My feeder rate was ST. San Diego, FL and Virginia Beach. I spent my time in security. Nothing to brag about. Go Navy!

BTW - I've also noticed that USNGM1sw, in prior posts, is very knowledgeable so maybe he can help!

I would think it would be an L&S Ultra 10x M3A, or possibly M3. Do you happen to know what value the clicks were for your windage and elevation?

Hope so, but I think if I recall he's a younger guy still in?

I don't think so.......that would mean tall target turrets. These were low. And it wasn't a 30MM tube

1/4" @ 100yds both elevation and windage...like a typical hunting scope if I remember correctly.

Wish I had more time on them.

My M3A has low covered turrets, not target turrets at all...

Not even close. These were 1 inch tubes, gloss, with the Leupold gold ring around the bell. Nothing tactical looking about them at all.

Oh okay, gotcha. Sounds like a Vari-X III of some sort but if it was a fixed 10x then I have no idea. There was a 3.5-10X Navy reticle M3... I'll step aside for somebody who knows more...

That's exactly what they resembled but fixed 10X.....I have no idea if these were just a lower cost option for command ASF/EST/SRT? They were certainly not what you would picture as sitting on top of a "Sniper" rifle....

The DM course was not what you would think either.....all 100 yds poking at different size drawings of faces, dots and basic silhouette....90% hit rate you passed....; )

Son dug out my course binder......it's getting a tad "delicate" over the years. Only refers to "scoped Rifle, 7.62 M21 or M700 as assigned"......no help in there anywhere. Lots of commands had different scoped rifles.....ours were the only ones that looked like a "off the shelf" hunting scope.

Yes......welcome any insight from him, however this is way before his time I believe...I'm talking 80's. I believe he is currently active now.

Im fairly certain these M21's are no longer in service. Pretty sure they have been reconfigured or somewhere in sleep mode.

I sent him a PM.....
