Leupold FX-II Scout Scope Ring Question

Hi Folks,

For those of you who have Leupold FX-II Scout IER 2.5x28mm scope atop a SAI M1A Squad Scout, utilizing the factory rail, which rings are you using?

I'm looking for the lowest/closet fit and I'd really like QD's if practical.

Though I planned on going with traditional glass, I'm considering giving it a try as intended. This is the only scout config I'll likely ever have, so I might as well see what Cooper was so fond of. Yes, yes, I know the M14 was NEVER what he envisioned but it's as close as I'll come.

Thanks much!

I used these rings. Low mount no cheek riser needed. On a M14.CA rail.

I use the QDW rings, http://www.opticsplanet.com/leupold-...qrw-rings.html with an Ultimak M8 hand guard.

Thanks folks!

I assume you both use "low" rings?

Also, that's two rifles with an Ulitmak rail. Why do y'all use that? Do you find the factory scout mount ineffective?

I like the M8 because it is:
1- low enough to co-witness some red dot sights (I have TRS-25 & Vortex SPARC).
2- longer rail for optic placement and heat dispersion.
3- seems to stiffen the barrel (perceived accuracy improvement).
Be advised that the M8 only fits a USGI contour barrel.

Thanks from Hemi45

I have a Leupold VX-II LER 1.5-4x on mine with the factory rail. Leupold QRW Medium rings are the perfect height to get over the irons. I thought about getting an ultimak rail but found no need for it with this setup.

I built mine from parts, so I needed a rail.

How do you like that variable scope? I looked at that but thought the fixed 2.5 would be more idiot proof for a gun I'll likely use for hogs. All my glass is Leupold and all are variable except for the 4x rimfire atop my .22 CZ.

I appreciate the tip about medium rings clearing the irons but out of curiosity, do you think low rings would clear the barrel or would it touch. I can't quite tell from your pic.

Thanks!

Variable scope is nice although at 4x the eye relief is such that I start to get some black around the edges of the scope. Not a hard adjustment but worth noting that it will have a slightly different cheek weld position. The other powers are fine. I had looked at the FX-II but liked the flexibility of going with low mag or 4x if needed.

I think the low rings would bring the front site post into the picture. Probably something you would learn to ignore but Medium makes it a moot point. I am using a cheek riser pad but could get by without it.

Thanks from Hemi45

I've got a fixed 2.75 Burris on my Mauser scout rifle, and was really surprised how much I liked it, and how easy it is to use. The Scout concept calls for lowest rings.

^^^Understood but with irons, my hope is the medium rings will clear them but still be low enough as mentioned above. I'll see once I get it all set up. If they're too high, I guess there will be an exchange in my future.

Rich D , Thanks for the good read on the Cooper Scout Rifle. I have a Remington 660 in 243 and know what Mr. Cooper found when he used one. At 10.6 lbs, my Scout Squad is a tad bit heavier than Mr. Cooper's 7 lbs limit but I love it anyway. Useing the medium QR rings, I find that cheek riser helps my eye to line up with the scope better. Every head fits differently so experimentation is required.

Thanks from Rich D
