The rifle is a LMT (.556) with their fixed sights and the rifle was transported in a gun case (padded) between a locker, car and range for a few years. It was probably dropped a few times in the case but it was not intentionally abused.

This might be a one off but I have seen more iron sights break then optics. I'm not convinced that iron sights are more durable.
That appears to be an aluminum sight, not an Iron sight. If so, there's your problem.

It happens. As my grandpa told me in disgust on a few occasions "You could tear up an anvil in a sand pile."

Physical damage - pure brute force - is one issue.

Overall reliability is a different issue.

In a system, overall reliability equals the product of the reliability of each individual component.

A reliability of 1 = zero failures, a reliability of 0 = 100% failure.

Examples:

A system with two components each with a reliability of 0.9 (90%).
--Overall reliability = 0.9 x 0.9 = 0.81 (81%)

A system with five components each with a reliability of 0.9 (90%).
--Overall reliability = 0.9 x 0.9 x 0.9 x 0.9 x 0.9 = 0.59 (59%)

The more complicated a system is, the more prone it is to malfunction. That is unless the manufacturer (1) works to get the reliability of each component close to 100% in the design & test phase, and (2) uses rigorous quality control measures to keep it that way in production.

This rarely happens because accountants consider product development and quality control to be "overhead" and therefore must be minimized.

Murphy reminded us: "Remember - that piece of gear your life depends upon, was made by the low cost bidder."

Awards Showcase

I sent back 2 EOTechs for a refund, a 511 and a 512, on April 19 and received my refund check on June 11th.

I sent mine back and got a check in 4 weeks. Along with the POI problem mine used the N-batt. The battery would die even when it was turned off. And N-batteries and not easy to find. I'll look for something else.. PS when you return them don't forget to mention the sales tax. They will refund you that as well.

I taught a carbine class about a month ago. 1 Eotech in the entire class and it failed during the warm-ups. Brand new battery, reticle went out and wouldn't come back on. Installed new battery and checked to make sure contacts were clean. No love......and no reticle.

I have the HHS2 and am sending it back. I'm not kicking in doors but 20" at 100 yards is rediculous.

I sent my Eotech 512 back & replaced it with an Aimpoint Pro and I love it. I was already thinking about replacing my Eotech with another model that was designed for a magnifier (controls on the side) and the Aimpoint solved that. It also has a much longer battery life than the Eotech.

My buddy has/had an Eotech on his Smith and Wesson MP-15. He took it out coyote hunting on my land late last winter. He had all the problems that are known that day and missed one of the two coyotes he called in with his Mojo Super Critter decoy. His miss was definitely due to a scope problem that caused his 50 yard shot to go low. He sent his back in.

Last time he was by to target practice in my back yard, I let him put my Aimpoint PRO on his rail. I don't know what he is buying with his refund money. He is very happy to get the full refund for the POS Eotech.

I only run Aimpoints on my weapons. Either Comp M4s or a PRO. I am a happy camper.
