I wanted to do a quick write up on this subject as i feel its good to understand if your deciding on an cqc optic.
many are turned off by the 4moa size dot and its not illogical.
at 400 yards that dot is the size of a 16inch wheel.
however i have had great success on targets out to 475 yards with a 3x mag.
i normally zero my red dot so that my rifle shoots a bit high at 200 yards as that was max range at my old spot.
the key to using an aimpoint at long range is to turn down brightness all the way untill the dot is transparent. This is where the aimpoint compml2 4moa dot truly shines (ok bad pun). this will allow you to shoot long range without "covering the target."
The brightness at its highest setting allows fast aquisition in even bright snow, but you will find at the lowest setting in the visible range you will see a very crisp dot, a perfect 4 moa transparent circle.
with a 6x mag (i have not tried) this would be better but even with 3x the dot is about half the size of an acogs reticle
So i want to take this a bit further.
i plan to use a 9 inch target at 225 yards. Zero so that all rounds hit the center, then you have :
12:00 hold - 100 yards
center hold - 225 yards
6clock hold - 300 yards
9 and 3 oclock - 10mph wind at 225 yards
image through a 5x then zoomed
i hope to test this now that i have a 300 yard range.
any thoughts , suggestions , corrections?
