I just picked up a Leupold SX-1 spotting scope and I am now in need of something to put it on. Any suggestions? I like the idea of having a good tripod, but I do not want it to get in the way of my footing when I am shooting from a stance, and I would like something that I can use prone. So with that being said am I better off getting 2 pods or mounts, or is there something that will work for all my needs without take up a ton of room? I have seen some rod gizmo that the spotting scope mount slides up and down on, but it looked like a home mode thing. Thanks for the help.

Take a look at the Vanguard line of tripods....Amazon has about the best prices I've seen. The Vanguard is capable of use from all firing positions. Legs spread enough to bring it down to prone height and the scope mount can be moved from vertical to horizontal. About $180 with pistol grip scope mount. I also use a Ray-Vin pole mount, available from Creedmoor.

There's also a sort of an AR looking shoulder mount for spotting scopes, makes them very mobile. I use mine a fair bit, for wildlife observation and for shooting when I'm too lazy to change to a tripod. Mine has a big red electronic shutter release button (thing can also be used a mount for long lensed cameras). It gets some wide eyed questions at the range, and sometimes from bird watchers and such- "What does THAT do?" Of course I tell people it activates a death ray....

EDIT: the modern version of what I'm talking about can be seen at the following link. They've toned down the firearms look, sadly:

+1 on the high power competition style scope stands. If you look around you can find others. Tripods are difficult to use in position shooting because they are so hard to adjust, and nearly impossible to use in prone and sitting because the legs get in the way.

Check out B&H Photo for a large selection of tripods and competive prices. They are a large photo/visual arts supplier. I currently have a Bogen/Manfrotto for my spotting scope that I bought years ago for my photography interest. I've never tried it prone but the legs will spread out and it works well for low angle photography.

Get a proper scope stand. You will not regret it. You will be able to place the spotting scope wherever you like. Off the table or to the left of your elbow in prone.
