I have a cheap gen 1 monocular I picked up at Cabelas. All I can say is it is impressive what you can see in the dark. I'm sure that a better scope must even be more so. For the money your looking at spending I would think a gen 2 or 3 could be had.

There's a whole sub-forum dedicated to NV over on AR15.com. I'm not in the market so I haven't done too hardcore research over there but the info is there. What I took away is not to bother with gen 1 and pony up for gen 2-3 but YMMV :D
If I were in the market, I'd check out TNVC, they come highly rated and don't sell crap...but I'm sure they're pricy

I have two anpvs-4's with gen 3 tubes, great scope, good field of view.
Can get reticle's for 7.62 and 5.56.
Kind of large by todays standards but a lot cheaper.
Good light amplification from folded mirror system.
Look at my pictures,

I got my PVS-14 slightly cheaper at a gunshow - $1800
It has a GG&G pictanny mount on it as a bonus.
I have multiples of the older scopes PVS1 (2), PVS2 (4), PVS3 (2), PVS4 (2) and the PVS-14 is really what you should get. The PVS4 would be second choice. For 2K you should be able to get two PVS-4s and rifle mounts. Store in Ammo cans, or proper stellite cases.

Look at my pictures, | I also have a PVS-4 but with a gen 2 tube. Got it on ebay under 2k. I'll probably sell it sometime in the future.

Just a suggestion but if you are going to spend 2K you can pick up some nice thermal scopes for about that, not military grade or anything like that, but thermal is the better way to go. Sportsmansguide i know had some on sale just recently for about 1300. Hope this helps.

I need night vision, being able to see in the dark is such a huge advantage. Even being able to own the basic setup, like a monocule optic with IR laser attached to your weapon, would mean you can shoot and move like it's daytime. However if it comes to needing that I'm pretty sure the Russians have parachuted into America and we are all screwed.
I've been checking out night vision equipment on readymaderesources but realize those are so far down the priority list I might as well leave it alone.

Found this at Fulton Armory, 1,400. Plus you can get ballistic reticles for this sight.

Greetings,
Not to high jack, but similar question. I'm looking for a "decent" quality set of NV binoculars. I have an older first gen Russian set that died and I haven't been able to figure out how to get them apart to try and fix. The importer is long gone as well and I've had no replies to inquiries on different boards for help.
Looking around, all I've been able to find are either very expensive or "toy" quality. Anyone have a lead on something that would be around say $600 and be repairable if it broke? My main use would just be looking at wildlife off my deck, nothing serious or "tactical". No need for helmet mount, etc.. Thanks!
Regards, Jim

What are you going to use it for? A helmet mounted monocle is much more versatile than a rifle mounted scope.

You might be able to find an early model PVS-14 for about $2K. They ran about 3+ when new, but the later models have some improvements. Even so, I have an early PVS-14 and it is downright amazing. One time I accidentally left the front lens cover on it and could still see just fine at night. The lens cover has a tiny pinhole in it designed to let the unit run in daylight without blowing out the tube. It will fit on a helmet mount, or on the head-strap that comes with it, or on one of several mounts that go behind an illuminated scope or red dot. A Gen. I or II unit might make a good backup or better-than-nothing unit.
