I have the high mount which is fine, but find I never go to irons with the scope mounted. So lower would be fine for me. However, you want to calculate height of the mount, rings and half the objective diameter to make clearance with the barrel.

This is a 50 obj. on a high mount:

I have two Bassett Low mounts and love them. They are so easy to remove and re install and they allow you to mount your scope as low as you can if you use low rings. I prefer a low mounted scope on the M1A.

For those of you using the low Bassett, what height rings are you using? I'm using a scope with a 40mm Obj. (PFI RR-900) Thanks-

I ended up getting these mounts from Brownells. 100-000-957WB TSR Aluminum Rings, 30mm, Low

This is on a 50mm objective 4x12 Burris XTR-312

BTW, I'm talking about The Basset scope mounts for M 1A NM rifle.

Originally I posted that I need to know if it would be any good reason to get the Basset Lo mount with the Pic rail or the standard mount. I'm not going to mount anything except a Bushnell 4x18 308 BDC scope. I think the standard Lo Mount looks cleaner but is it better to use the mount with the Pic rail even though it is $50 more?
I plan to remove the mount and scope for service rifle matches a couple times a year. Mostly I'll be shooting hogs and other eating size critters. Thanks,

I would get the pic rail because it :
1. Looks better
2. pic rails are the "in" thing so you can re-sell it easily. Most people don't want the old type rails.
3. Lastly, you get more flexibility in scope position with the pic rail.

I got the rail mount. It seemed more versatile.

Thanks for the info Capona and Rich. I went to the Bassett website and pulled up closeups of the mounts, after I saw ,them I decided I needed the Low Pictinny. It looks more substantial and I probably will get the Burris low rings. I have a set of Burris 1.5 rings on my DPMS LR308 and it is a bit tall but the LR pattern requires a high scope moung in order to operate the charging handle and clear the gas port and tube. Again, Thanks!

The size of your Objective Lens and Ring height will also dictate whether the Low or High Mount is right for you
I run a 30mm (tube), 56mm OL Scope, on Burres, Low Xtreme Rings on a Bassett High Pic Mount:

Well how about these apples!

Last night around midnight I went to Basset's website and struggled with PayPal, never got it to accept my info, kept getting a message of a failure on their end. So I did the guest debit card. Ordered a new low Picatinny mount for my new M1A. I figured a two week delay on shipping, a few minutes ago got an email, the order has shipped today! 2 days should do it only about100 miles. USPS. I haven't even ordered the scope yet. Whoopie!

I use a Bassett low Picatinny mount. I like it a lot and seems to be more forgiving of variances in commercial receivers.

I ordered another Bushnell 4x18 308BDC scope, like the one on my AR308 and a set of Weaver rings.
This should all come together next week.
