Issue with Installing M1D Garand Sniper Criterion Barrel w/block

Hi,

I was just notified by my gunsmith that the M1D Criterion barrel and block purchased from Numrich had less than 7 degree draw on my USGI M1 Garand receiver. Apparently, the block machining will not achieve a 15 degree draw. My gunsmith stated that he tried the barrel on another USGI receiver and still had the same issue. His work around was to apply a compound (strong bonding adhesive) to assist in securing the barrel to receiver. He also, stated swaging the barrel could not be achieved due to the block's position. Machining and emplacing a spacer would not be cost effective.

It looks like the barrel will be secure for now but a hard day on the range will yield the real result. If any one else has had this issue please post your comments here.

Thanks,

I got one of those barrels from Numrich and had the same problem. I was gathering parts for the rifle and the barrel was one of the first ( I didn't even have the receiver yet ) parts I got so I put it away until needed. several months later I screwed the barrel on and could almost bring it to final position by hand. Thats a no-go for me! I ended up turning down and fitting a standard M1 barrel with a mounting block that I installed myself.

The problem with the Numrich M1D barrel is that whoever did the lathe work went according to the original M1D drawings and failed to notice that the reproduction mounting block was about 3 to 4 thousandths shorter than the originals. This leaves a gap and a very small amount of barrel shoulder to take the torque of tightening the barrel to the proper position. The block has to take the place of the part of the shoulder that was removed. The one I installed does just that.

I'm building another M1D now ( .308 ) and I'm doing a lot of measuring before I even think about turning on the lathe.

Just remember. Each barrel block is a custom fit. No two are the same. Most need to be trued up before use.
