Greetings from flyover country, land of the conservative gun owner (except for the big cities). Had a SA SOCOM M1A a couple of years ago, fell in love with the platform, but had to part with it in order to buy an engagement ring. Been pining for an M1A ever since, and I recently acquired a nice, old (~80s) Armscorp M1A with all GI parts (Mostly TRW, but the trigger group is H&R). Gas system was professionally unitized, and a gunsmith friend and I worked the gun over until it was flawless. We shimmed the gas system, replaced the GI piston with a Sadlak stainless piston, put a .62 NM front sight on it, disassembled everything and cleaned and lubed it all. The only things I still want to do to the gun is to fit an oversized, hooded NM rear sight and put a Fulton Armory reamed NM flash-hider on it (just LUV! the tuning fork-like ringing one of those gives when you work the action!). Took her out this last weekend to see what she'll do, and at 200 yards I can hold about 1.5 MOA with iron sights. Doing the initial sighting-in at 20 yards (dang non-standard range distance at the state conservation dept range) I was punching nice tight cloverleaf groups when I took my time. This little beauty shoots better than I can!
Anyhow, glad to be among fellow enthusiasts. I didn't bother joining before because I didn't have an M1A (despite wanting one again), but now that I do, here I am! Looking forward to picking up more arcane M1A / M14 trivia and lots of good practical knowledge.
