Ole' Redneck nailed it. Depends on what you want to do with your rifle. I'm a Scout man myself since 3-400 yards is a very long shot for me and it just seems to feel right. welcome from South Dakota.

Welcome from the Free State of Idaho!
You found the right place to learn about the M14/M1A platform. There are a number of true experts here that have helped me more than they will ever know.

However, in recent years I've started making more of an effort to get back into shooting and taking advantage of my Dad's small arsenal. I look at as another way to spend time with my Dad!

And that brings me to why I'm here. I bought a Ruger Scout Rifle a couple years ago and have really enjoyed shooting it. While the Ruger doesn't quite fit the "Scout" profile perfectly according to the Colonel, there are many attributes that I like about it. So, I started looking for a similar "do-it-all" rifle, except semi auto.

My first thought was AR, but I'm not into the tactical stuff and with CA laws it just didn't seem like a practical idea. After a little research I found the M1A and with continued research (and some history lessons) I believe I've found the rifle I want.

So I'm hoping to learn from the experts and decide which variation of the M14/M1A will work best for my needs.

The best variation of the M1A you can buy is the one you buy in any gun friendly state other than California.

Do yourself a favor and get out of LA-LA LAND as soon as possible.

Thanks for the warm welcome Gent's!

My original plan was for a SAI Scout, the length and feel of the rifle seems to fit me well, better than the SOCOM or standard. But now I'm leaning towards a custom build and have sent out some feelers on build cost/lead time to the majority of builders recommended here.
