I've been following this site for the last few months, and finally joined today. I've got an SAI M1ASM my wife picked me up for Christmas. Haven't shot a rifle for over 20 years (worked at a gun range looong ago where the range master would spend time after-hours with me and his M1 Garand, but have not shot a rifle since), but loved the M1-style rifles from afar for a long time.
Glad to finally step into the field!
I'm looking to join up for some high power rifle matches, and even started with the high power rifle clinic at the Cascade facility in Ravensdale (
http://cascadeshootingfacilities.org...linics2012.pdf), and can't wait for the second and third clinics. There's an offhand match the day after the second clinic that I may attempt, I just don't know what equipment I'll have by then (I don't have a shooting coat, 20 round mags, glove, scope, or anything). But I'm going to be putting in some quick orders, I tell you what!
It's a but surprising that there were hardly any M14-style shooters on the line (I was the only one, other than one other guy, I think, out of 40 people there), but I didn't get an M1A to be one of the "cool kids", I got one because I respect the rifle's legacy, capabilities, and because a wood stocked service rifle just calls out to me. Why fight against it?
I'm a completely blank slate, so any maintenance, ammo, stock finishing, equipment recommendations, etc. are more than welcome!
