Puget Sound newbie

I've been following this site for the last few months, and finally joined today. I've got an SAI M1ASM my wife picked me up for Christmas. Haven't shot a rifle for over 20 years (worked at a gun range looong ago where the range master would spend time after-hours with me and his M1 Garand, but have not shot a rifle since), but loved the M1-style rifles from afar for a long time.

Glad to finally step into the field!

I'm looking to join up for some high power rifle matches, and even started with the high power rifle clinic at the Cascade facility in Ravensdale (http://cascadeshootingfacilities.org...linics2012.pdf), and can't wait for the second and third clinics. There's an offhand match the day after the second clinic that I may attempt, I just don't know what equipment I'll have by then (I don't have a shooting coat, 20 round mags, glove, scope, or anything). But I'm going to be putting in some quick orders, I tell you what!

It's a but surprising that there were hardly any M14-style shooters on the line (I was the only one, other than one other guy, I think, out of 40 people there), but I didn't get an M1A to be one of the "cool kids", I got one because I respect the rifle's legacy, capabilities, and because a wood stocked service rifle just calls out to me. Why fight against it?

I'm a completely blank slate, so any maintenance, ammo, stock finishing, equipment recommendations, etc. are more than welcome!

Welcome aboard. Just about everything I know about the M14/1a I learned from this site. It's a great place.

Your wife picked up a super match for xmas? I suggest you keep treating her like you have been.

Welcome from Puyallup. I shoot at the Paul Bunyan range. One of these days I plan on making it up to Cascade.

Welcome! As SacTroop says we have some shoots and get togethers at Cascade R&P. I also took a couple of the Hi Power clinics at Cascade last year, but only got to shoot in one match due to work constraints and lack of focus. There are a few guys shooting the M14 and M1 Garand but it's hard to be competitive with the AR crowd. I'm just looking for the fun and am there for the love of the platform. I'll add you to the PM list and you can show up for a shoot if you like.

Welcome aboard. Glad to see another PNW member.

And definitely take Mercman up on his offer. I love going to the group shoots. Always a good time.

Yeah, it was a heck of a surprise. I'm pretty sure she didn't expect the fallout from it -- time to get a reloading outfit, shooting coat, a dozen mags, a couple cases of ammo...when's the next Christmas, again?

Welcome to the forum from NorCal. You certainly entered the realm of the M1A/M14 on some strong legs with the SM. Keep us posted on how the comp shooting goes and remember, for many of us the first is just the beginning. There are many configurations of this great rifle and they can become addictive.
