Iwo survivor = head of the line!

Was in the local mini-mart grabbing a cup of coffee and early morning munchies a few days ago. Was at the register checking out when I noticed an old man with a blue & gold cap saying 'Iwo Jima Survivor' and a CPOs anchor. A little old salt , he was moving a bit slow , with a cane. He grabbed only a newspaper , walked toward the check-out line. Normally , I don't appreciate those who stand there and rearrange their wallets/purses when there's a line waiting , especially when I'm running late for work. But after paying , I stood my ground , and motioned for him to go in front me and said "head of the line , Chief!". He obviously saw my 'Navy Veteran' cap and smiled as he took the spot I offered. Someone behind me grumbled a bit , but I turned , looked them in the eye and said , "you see that mans hat , you see mine?" 'Nuff said , they got the message.

Since I made it to the front door before him , I held it for him and popped him a quick salute. He returned it with a smile.
