To the list of good naval movies, I will add 'Ice Station Zebra' and 'The Bedford Incident' because I also love the Cold War stuff. It was so great when it never went hot.

Edit: Found it, Sailor Of The King, from a novel by C.S. Forester, and starring Jeffrey Hunter. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sailor_of_the_King | Can't believe I didn't think of this one right away. A most excellent film and they made the hero a Canadian- if only because he was also the illegitimate son of a British admiral and the Brits wanted to step away from any real-life speculation.... |

I wasn't in the Navy, but couldn't resist mentioning a notable movie.
One movie that deserves mentioning, though I wouldn't call it my favorite is
"Here Comes the Navy" filmed in 1934.
Starred James Cagney and Pat O'Brien
It was filmed on the USS Arizona, with a lot of good footage. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Here_Comes_the_Navy |

It wasn't as stupid as it sounds, even though I seem to remember it was on right before or right after "My Mother The Car." |

“Submarine D-1” w/Pat O’Brian and Wayne Morris (1937)
and
“Submarine Command” w/William Holden and William Bendix (1951)
Oh and as I’m composing this I’m on a “War Patrol”, as I do most morning, I have “Run Silent Run Deep” playing in the background.
And thanks for the PM Sweets and hey, shoot me another on with an e-mail addy, I have a “special tune” for you also…

I don't know how useful this will be to anyone, but this morning I noticed that the Turner Classic Movies channel is airing "Torpedo Run" starring Glenn Ford this afternoon (I think circa 14:30 hrs EST). Those interested who are at home, or who can run home etc, take note!

You are correct USMC6094, "The Bridges At Toko-Ri", 1954 is a classic, right there with “Submarine Command” 1951. But I have to say as a “Boat Sailor” “The Bridges At Toko-Ri” beats “Submarine Command”, but only by a little bit. William Holden is the man, and he really did it in the “The Wild Bunch” 1969… I watch it several times a week…

Hands down favorite is SAN PEBBLES followed by a bunch. Actually anything with a ship in it strikes my fancy.

Anything John Wayne is good enough for me -
Harm's Way, They Were Expendable, Operation Pacific top them.
Sea Chase is another good one (non Navy, but it's a ship on the ocean )
Others-
Top Gun is good.
Enemy Below
Destination Tokyo.
Navy Log was hot stuff - you remember Silent Service (also on about the same time period)?

| Older thread brought back;
Interesting thread. I didn't see "The Gallant Hours". It's the story of William (Bull) Halsey during WWII. Cagney is one of my favorite actors to watch. I know he made a few military and Navy movies. Trivia; Cagney was also in the first film about the Mutiny on the Bounty back in the thirties though he did not head line.
"Run Silent Run Deep" is one of my favorites too and I've read the book more than once. The researcher Ballard has a book out about the Solomons sea battles and his look at the ships on both sides sunk during those fights. It adds heart and soul to the movie "In Harms Way".
