I know for a fact, that elitist piece of fluff would not have lasted long on my ship out in the Tonkin Gulf. That pogue would have had a terrible mishap some dark stormy night at sea and have come up missing at morning quarters the next day. While that cat may not be a queer???? By the looks of him, the juries still out... He'd probably still hold one in his mouth until the swelling went down.
The tradition was, the last time you sailed under the Golden Gate bridge coming back into port for the last time... You'd throw your white hat over the side just as the ship sailed underneath the bridge.
When I went under the Golden Gate for my last time... I was a Radioman Petty Officer 2nd Class and I was out on the starboard wing of the bridge talking to our ships XO. I excused myself and walked over to the edge of the starboard wing and tossed my white hat into the sea. The XO just laughed because he knew how short I was at the time.
