Re: Ships

Served from 1967-71 as an aviation fire control technician (AQ2) first in VA-42 at Oceana, VA and later assigned to VA-34 and deployed on the USS JFK ( CV-67). I worked on the APQ/92 search / terrain clearance radar suite of the Grumman A6 Intruder. I never had a job that gave me so much satisfaction or responsibility.

Left RVN in 1969 on the USS Snohomish County, a LST. First and last Navy ship I was ever on.

USS Midway, USS Iowa, USS Downes, USS Lexington, USS Yellowstone.

3 of them are now museums, 1 used for target practice and the other scrapped. Boy that makes me feel old.

Wink None for more than 3 months

USS FREDRICK (LST) Most fun I had on ship. CO and Crew were 1st rate. Had Smokers 1st day out, Navy-vs-Marine. I have Pictures of a 145 lbs Marine taking it to a 200 lbs SEAL. OK the Marine was selected to go to the Olympics in 80 before Carter pulled us out. (This was sometime in the summer of 80 or 81). Fed us BBQ Chicken and Fried potato's. Yum Yum, that night the Captain skirted a tropical storm and the "Fast Freddy" was doing some serious rocking. many Marines lost their chicken that night.

USS BARBOR COUNTY (LST)
USS BRISTOL COUNTY (LST)
USS DENVER (LSD) Gangs galore. This ship was overrun with gangs. Mostly Chicago-LA- NYC and Detriot. We had the Green Machine Gang so we weren't too bothered by it. All my people went in groups everywhere. Big Groups. 3 or 4 months after we were off it there was a 60 minutes piece about the gangs onboard and the deaths of several sailors.
USS OGDEN (LSD)
USS TRIPOLI- We called it the USS NEVER SAIL. In 82 or 83 we tried to sail with her 4 times and every time we had to go back to San Diego. The last time with the assistance of a tug. We were bussed to Pendelton and then flown out to the BLT.

Bill

Don't know if this counts but I went to Vietnam on the MSTS Gen. William Wiegle. The worst three weeks I spent in the Marine Corps. 2100 Army and 700 Marines. Hit a storm between Oki, and DaNang. Think I was the only one on the ship that didn't hurl. I was raised on the water.

I was on two LSTs and made assaults in Amtracks for Operation Double Eagle and Double Eagle II in 1966. I do not know the names of the LSTs. Wish I had kept a diary so I could remember everything I did in Nam. Didn't get a camera until I had been in country 5 or 6 months. Got CRAFT on a lot of stuff from back then.

USS Ponce - 22nd MEU(SOC) IN 1997. USS Carter Hall was on her maiden voyage, broke down, and we got to take over all of Bravo Co 1/2's ops for the first 1/2 of the pump, while they sat in France, waiting for repairs. lucky sob's.

RAC's, RRC's and CRRC's, but the name changes with every new coxswain. the most memorable RAC I ran was Titan, as close to a legend as a RAC could attain in my unit without getting shot up or dropped from a helo at 500ft.
