NTC San Diego is GONE !!!

So I am here in Oceanside setting up a new business and needed to go to San Diego for some stuff.

I turn down Rosecrans Blvd and guess what, the entire NTC San Diego is gone. It has been replaced by shops and businesses. The old officer club is now a bar & resturant called Corvette's. There is a Von's grocery store and all other things where were the base used to be.

In fact were I needed to go was there too. Officer housing was converted into condos.

The entire NTC boot camp is totally gone too, along with the Fleet Sonar school.

The whole thing is now a local attraction called LIBERTY CENTER. I thought it was a smart move by the city father of instead of having a bunch of closed buildings for vagrants they made a decent shopping complex out of it. What is funny the old blue & gold building numbers are still on the sides of the buildings.

Take heart old salts. The Brown Bag sandwich shop is still open and in it's regular place. Except I missed them in that they closed at 1530...crap!!! Had to get Chinese instead.

Oh, & Les Girls is still doing just fine too.

I have not gone to Coronado & North Island yet, but will let you know when I do.

I don't know exactly when, but I know it was closed since at least 96, I was there during the RNC in 96 and the Navy was gone the city was using it.

Are you $hiting me....gone, when did this happen, where do sailors go for basic training ...freaking awful...is this a joke. What is going on here. PS looked it up...its for real, closed under another a-hole Democrat Pres...figures:

Base closure

Base in 2012
The end of the Cold War led to military downsizing and the need to close surplus bases. In 1993, the federal Base Realignment and Closure Commission slated NTC for closure.[3] Since 1994, RTC Great Lakes in Illinois has been the Navy's only basic training facility.
The Navy closed NTC facilities incrementally. As the military functions on the base dwindled, so did the Navy's budget. Fearing the lack of activity on the base would lead to security problems, the City and Navy entered into a master lease agreement in 1995 allowing the City interim use of 67 acres (270,000 m2) of the base site. The agreement was later amended to include more than half of the NTC property, with approximately 75 buildings occupied by interim users. These buildings were subleased from the City to various parties including film companies, nonprofit organizations, City departments and small businesses. In addition, interim leasing allowed the City to maintain the buildings and landscape areas at a higher standard of maintenance than an otherwise decreasing Navy caretaker budget could provide. The Navy officially closed NTC on April 30, 1997, and all military operations ceased.[5]
The southernmost portion of the base was not closed but was retained by the military under the control of Naval Base Point Loma. Facilities still in military use include a medical clinic, a small Navy Exchange store and a gas station. In addition, 500 units of military housing were constructed.[12]

Maybe they moved it to San Francisco to help with the seafood shortage.

I believe they closed RTC, San Diego in 93 (same year I retired) as a result of, as the gent above stated, BRAC. Moffett Field went at the same time.

LOL!!! I think I drove through it one time when I got stationed back at 32nd Street and it was still RTC, to show my wife where basic training was. Can't say that I miss it, but I remember it...

Remember the bus ride in from Lindburgh and the bus ride out to Lindburgh.

Looked at it plenty of times pulling out for local socal and westpac

Fleet ASW (Naval Base Point Loma) was still there when I came back from deployment last year. Medical is still there too. Everything else was given to the city. Then again, there could have been more changes since last year.

Liberty Station is a pretty neat place and probably one of the nicer portions of Point Loma. I have not been there too recently but they did open up a new Stone Brewery there. What I really like is that they re-purposed many of the buildings instead of tearing them down. That leaves a little history there.

Depending on what your looking for the exchange down at 32st on dry side is probably the best except that its full of "black shoes" (surface navy). North Island is getting better though and I'm more comfortable up there. Actually the Camp Pendelton or Miramar exchanges are pretty nice too. But just FYI Miramar is USMC now...
