New Purchase: SAI Scout Squad

I just purchased a SAI Scout Squad. I have a full size so I figured I would get one a little shorter. I believe it will be a good woods gun and an all around fun shooter.

Any information about the rigidity of the forward optic mount, options for EER optics, and general information/feedback on the model of gun itself would be helpful.

Thanks all!

You will grow more fond of that Scout. I know mine has been a joy to shoot. As for the forward scope mount, i never quite got used to mine with a Leupold IER mounted. It seemed front heavy for my taste. My buddy still digs his setup just like that however.

A gas cylinder shim pack for $15 and clearancing the stock off the barrel reduced my groups to less than half what they were out of the box. Also took a stone to the recoil spring guide's edges to smooth out the sharp spots. Really slick feeling now.

Shoot and Enjoy!!

Congratulation on the new rifle. Your choice of the shorter barrel is a good one. The platform should service well out to around 300 yards. The forward optics mount has been a topic of discussion several time so if you do some research you will find many good threads and posts on the subject. Get out and shoot it and enjoy.

I know from experience that the scout will shoot well way beyond 300 yards.
I got rid of the scope mount that came with mine,it just wasn't solid.

I've only shot it with iron sights since then. The scout is a great rifle.

I can't really offer any advice on the optic mount - I took it off and replaced the handguard with a solid one. For now I'm an "iron sights" kind of guy.

The iron sights is a good idea. This past weekend I fired my Scout with the forward mounted Leupold 2.5x fixed. To check my quick release rings, I fire an open sight group and re-fixed my scope. Open sights was almost as good as my 2.5 scope group. Re-fixed my scope and the zero didn't move. It was a good day. 168 Hornady Amax gives .75 to 1.5 inch groups in this rifle @ 100 yds. The 2.5x will pay off more at 300 yards +.

Scout

Thanks Boy's, I've been shootin my NM since 86 when I bought it right out of the Airborne Inf. And now have saved up $1,600 for a new scout. Found one local on Seattleguns.net. I see them all over the net for $1,500 But tax and ship pt it well above that $.
I've built a few AR's but those are to hand out to family when SHTF !
Should I buy part's and have some one who really knows the M1A
build? for less?
Any suggestion's would be appreciated.

As a neophyte gunner, will someone kindly expand on "A gas cylinder shim pack" and its implementation?

Congrads on the scout. I have a bush which is the same less the forward scope mount. This rifle is alot more fun to shoot then my super, but then again I have no real space to shoot distance where I live so it sits. My bush is one of my SHTF guns.

Welcome to the Forum!!

Shimming the gas cylinder and gas port alignment: A "How To" should answer your question.

Lets see some pics.

Necessary tools to have?

As a new owner with no prior experience on this platform (many others though), what recommended tools should I acquire for the Scout Squad platform?

I've seen a handful of different tools while reading, but didn't recognize any of them--so what should I get when building the kits for the twins?
