M1A Scout suggestions

Hi guys,

I've been lurking around for a bit and i finally decided to ask away.

So i have recently bought a Springfield m1a scout rifle and wanted to put a few upgrades for durability and accuracy purposes.

My rifle has been head spaced to 1.632 on 12.29.09 and serial is 242xxx, so from what i have gathered in these forums, i do not think it will have any GI parts at all....only cheap stuff.....and unfortunately this is what bothers me, paying such premium price for cheap internals...

So i wanted to know which parts to change that will add to the durability, accuracy and value of the rifle....without having to sell my organs for it GI6

Listing manufacturers, separating durability parts with accuracy parts will greatly help. Though i want to concentrate on accuracy first and durability second.

First i want to say that i have shot exactly 100 rounds through it with no problems at all. As for accuracy, shooting at 100 yards...i did not zero the sights (have no spotting scope yet), i would say is nothing special....although it was probably more my fault than the guns..so i will take it on a rerun once i get more ammo and time.

Something else i wanted to confirm. Is the m1a exactly the same as the m14? meaning are the m14 and m1a parts interchangeable?

I am planning to change the stock to the Cali legal sage EBR, as i have given up on the MOD 0 with pistol grip as i refuse to cut the mag release and cannot find a "bullet button" for it.

This will probably be a long term project as money is an issue, planning to buy a Saiga 7.62x39 and do a pistol grip conversion in the next month or so....and a Mosin Nagant is really looking nice lol.

Getting a forged receiver will probably be the last upgrade i do...if i ever buy one.

Thanks.

Edit- forgot to mention that i will mostly be shooting surplus ammo (until its dried up) and/or cheap ammo on it.

The first thing I'd do would be to run about 500 more rounds through it. Anything that's going to fail early will probably do so by then. If nothing breaks don't replace it. You still have to have parts so spares are in order. I think there is a sticky around somewhere on what parts to have and in what quantities. There's also some lively discussions occasionally about what to replace and when; what's ALWAYS worked for me is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Ammo and mags would be my starting point to "upgrade" although an accurate, reliable battle rifle seems already pretty much upgraded to me.

Upgrades

+1 Wayne.....Just shoot it till the sights fall off........no, really, you can pick up a spare G.I. extractor assembly and ejector assembly. Welcome to the forum......also use the money to buy more ammo, Hopp's bore cleaning solvent and copper solvent, a little grease and read the stickies!

First off, welcome to the forum!!

Also agree, shoot it until something breaks!! You can buy some of the wear parts such as extractors, springs, ejectors, firing pins........spend your money on ammo and mags!! Enjoy!

Welcome, it's nice to see another Bay Area member !

I agree with all of the above, you ought to put 900 more rounds through it before making any decisions as what to "upgrade". I have a scout that was made in 2007 with 100% commercial SAI parts, with nary a problem, I don't think anything on this rifle is cheap or junky.

The thing to keep in mind is, while the new commercial parts aren't USGI, they are new, and we have no idea what conditions and how many rounds the GI parts have been subjected to. An SAI oprod doesn't have the mojo of a TRW one, but that GI oprod may be just five rounds from failure.

Just a few thoughts......
