Scout rifles with heavy contour barrels?

Has anyone custom built a scout rifle (or short barrel variant) using a heavy contoured short barrel? Does a heavy contour short barrel even exist? I figure the added stiffness of a heavy profile helps even short barrel versions the same as in standard lengths. It does make the rifle that much heavier and may make finding stocks more difficult. Will fiberglass stocks fit the heavy profile barrel?

the SAI Scout uses a Medium profile barrel, i believe. i researched the short barrels when i was building my R700 and its common thought that a short barrel actually is better to an extent as it is stiffer and the muzzle will move less. 18-20" is seen as optimum for the most part in the bolt guns. ive never seen a heavy scout though.

At the range I go to one of the guys built a scout rifle on an M1A receiver using a heavy contour barrel that he had removed from a match rifle and cut down to size.

Shouldn't be that difficult thing to do if you have the cash and cant find a heavy contour short barrel

I have been considering this myself, a full heavy NM Krieger, cut down to 18.5 or 18".

Hey guys,,,well let me be the first to say I have one,,, It is my LRB with a Krieger Hvy 18.5 inch BBL !!! Yes it is Heavy,,but I knew that going in. Krieger had the HVY Shorty's for a long time posted on there site,,I finally came up with the $$$ and bought one when they went on Clearance,, down to $300 bucks if I remember ! The do not have them anymore I believe,,you could always call and ask !!! As far as Stock fitting,,it fits fine in my GI Synthetic Stock,,,but took some work and sanding to get it into a Walnut one I had !! It shoots pretty good right now,,but both stocks the Lockup is pretty crappy,,I have a new Walnut Boyd's that I am going to fit it into when I get off my lazy butt,,but I think that will bring the groups together alot !!!! I will keep you posted !!! I can also take some pics and post them for you guys sometime,,,I'll try for some pics on Sunday!!

Thanks from ChicagoMike

Hi Scout guy,

Sorry, not understanding the "lockup" issue. Is that the targeting acquisition issue or the mechanical action? Thanks for the update.

Awards Showcase

Hey gents, I too was looking for the heavy krieger short barrel althought I missed the train when they went on clearance. Last winter I was toying around with the idea of a heavy krieger short barrel group buy. I went as far as calling krieger and got the skinny. It is going to be approx $400.00 a barrel short chambered. I have been watching the forum and maybe it's time to ask permission to post a feeler thread. I can't think of a better manufacturer. Before I do it, I am going to try and have the price reduced. The last krieger group buy I think the barells were selling for just over three hundred, when I ask krieger why they said they forgot to add in the cost to short chamber and the emloyee already made his deal and could not back out.

No problem Sir,,the receiver sits nicely in the stock,,but when you put the trigger group in and lock the trigger guard,,it locks up VERY easy,,no real force is needed ! I think a tighter Lockup of the trigger guard/trigger group would equal better accuracy,,I believe the rifle moves some in the stock,,just my thoughts on it anyways !

M1A M14 Heavy Scout barrel

I have two "NEW" Scout heavy barrels. These came from a Ntl.Guard unit in Washington State many years back. I sat on them for years and sent them to a tool and die man last year. He chopped them down and parkerized to 17" instead of 18" so they will have to have a permanent pined or welded flash suppressor attached. They are marked 762 1X10 4150 8 86. I have no idea who the original mfg.was and I do not know if short chambered. I have no muzzle or throat gauge but the first one shot well enough in matches that I won quite a few. I no longer have a rifle so will sell @ $250.00 ea.

A rifle barrel can be 16 inches long and still be legal, here in America anyway.
