There have been a couple of GI STANDARD WEIGHT NON CHROME LINED NM that were used to make shorties. While some traditionalists would cringe and cry"blasphemy", the owners were happy, with the accuracy and tge compact configuration.

IMHO,
a heavy barreled shorty would indeed be "unconventional"... aka a unicorn.

What tactical niche or role would demand such a configuration?

Short and compact usually goes with LIGHT WEIGHT, so who would want "short and heavy".

PS: M14.CA now makes their Scout handguard for medium weight barrels and they are selling well, so apparently there are indeed people out there who like unconventional.

Awards Showcase

A friend is having his Scout rebarreled with a Krieger stainless 18.5 medium weight. He wants short and accurate. Will go in an EBR chassis.

If you cut a NM medium weight barrel, you can only thread for 9/16x24. It is too thin for 5/8x24.

If you cut back below 18, you will probably need to open up the gas port to get it to cycle.

The amount of gunsmithing would probably be less with a new barrel.

Keep the 22" barrel as a spare or sell it off to help cover the other.

My research (no actual experience) finds, there is very little, if any at all difference in accuracy between the barrel lengths.

The biggest effect on accuracy is wind drift.

The muzzle Velocity from an 18" barrel is lower than that of a 22" barrel using the same load.

Therefore the wind effects the round out of the 18" more so than out of the 22".
with or shooting 'irons' is not the added sight length a plus?
