Scout Squad Optics

After years of wanting one, I got my first M1a on Sunday, a Springfield Scout Squad with the factory wood stock. I really like the rifle in its stock form, but I want to put an Aimpoint CompM3 on it. The purpose of this rifle will be for a camp protection rifle when camping/hunting, use around my family's property and friends farms, and just a fun one to shoot. I know I could just use a low 30mm ring and put it on the factory Scout rail, but I want to look at other options. Normally I like my red dots and low powered optics farther forward. After talking to SEI, they suggested I use one of their scope mounts and throw the Aimpoint on there, but from he pictures I've seen, that would put it pretty far back, and high.

Is there a mount that would put it just in front of the action?

What do you recommend?

Is the factory rail solid?

I'm planning on doing an SEI gas system, Navy brake, Tritium front sight, and trigger in order to make this rifle rugged and reliable, I don't want my optics mount and set up to be a weak point!

I have never used this as I prefer receiver mounted optics but many people swear by this handguard.

This sets your optic lower than the stock scout rail.

I tried an Ultimak M8 instead of the factory scout mount. I needed higher rings, which put my scope at the same level as when I used the factory mount with low rings. I went back to the factory mount and have never had any issues with it coming loose. As far as I can tell, it's as solid as any other mount.

Factory scout handguard with Leupold medium rings gets the scope at a good height for me. Ultimak lets you co-witness your sight with the irons but that's an expensive method to get there. I have a Leupold VX-II 1.5-4x that works well. 4x has a little bit of black rim due to eye relief. Leupold FX-II with a fixed 2.5x would work well for you.

mounted an Aimpoint on my tanker Garand, using the Ultimak rail pictured above. I believe that GG&G makes a cantilevered mount that will set the Aimpoint back further than the standard Aimpoint mount, but it is intended for AR's so it sets the optic higher. In my case I ended up fabricating my own mount to set it further back.

Check out the GG&G scout rail, will let you put your optic in the position you want, there is also a large channel in the rail so that you can see the irons clearly and not loose their function.
